By ANDY FRASER The ‘Old Fox’ was back in the area last Tuesday afternoon, prowling around the perimeter of Kilmer Park in North Van- couver along with his pack more commonly known as the Seattle Sounders. Sounders, and their pew head coach Alan Hinton came to town for an cxhibi- tion encounter with Peter Scott’s North Shore Pegasus. The encounter was not all to Scotts liking as Sounders downed his hard working squad 2-l on a muddy pitch. In ome sense it was a eng tmnt nr PR 4 Drivers entertainment ‘e automotive return match as Pegasus had downed the Seattlé side 2-0 about two weeks go in the Washington City. Hinton, who coached Tulsa Roughnecks last season in the NASL before being fired for attempting to protect his players from ownership comments, need- ed the game to try and give his players as much ex- perience together before the start of their season the end of the month. Even so, not all members were present. And for one, Bruce Rioch, the former Leeds United star and cap- tain of Scotland, it was a case of flying over from England, and literally in- troducing himself to some of his new Sounder teammates on Kilmer Park in North Vancouver. Hinton drops in on North Van Sounders down Pegasus 2-1 Following the regular mat- ch, Pegasus players agreed to stay on for extra time, giv- ing the Sounders more time together in action. That was their downfall. As the North Shore team found out, being part-timers means that conditioning and fitness will start to tell after more than 90 minutes of hard professional style and speed soccer. Putting together some nice passing plays and some finish by Roger Davies, formerly of Derby County and last year with Hinton in Tulsa, Sounders showed that given time they will be strong down the middle. Pegasus keeper Bill Grant made a number of excelicnt saves Off Seattle players as they began to get used to each other late in the game. warned as injuries Hinton and his assistant Bobby Howe will be attemp- ting to improve on Seattles poor season in 1979. Accompanying the team to the North Shore was another newcomer to the Sounder scene, Vincent Col- uccio, the owner and chair- man of the board. Coluccio, who freely ad- mits to knowing ‘nothing about the game’ says the previous !l owners were more interested in their ownership of the Seattle Sea Hawks than Sounders. He also said he wants to see the team regain the im terest of the community, one of the strong points of the Sounder franchise in the past. With Alan Hinton at the helm, it shouldn't be too im- possible a task. BREAKING AWAY QUICKLY ... is Paul Woodward. Watching the young Pegasus defender is Roger Davies, a brilliant striker with Seattle Sounders and formerly with Alan Hinton in Tulsa. Davies is from Derby County and much is ex- ‘pected from the smooth forward for the coming season. Sounders downed Pegasus 2-1 in regulation play but dominated the younger squad in ex- tra time.
