C4 - Wednesday, August I, 1984 - North Shore News Ge food GIFTS FOR THE GIVING T COMES up all through the year, but more frequently in summer, the time for visits and visitors, trips and reunions. You need a small gift to take to Saskatchewan, or to leave with your hostess in Yorkshire; you’d like something Cana- dian, at least; at best, saying ‘‘British Columbia’’ without necessarily dogwood motif. You really don’t want to buy another pair of jade ear- rings or another maple-leaf tie-pin. Even those some- times turn out to have been made in Taiwan! Well, there’s a place, a bright, well-lit small shop opened recently in the Royal Centre, which stocks such a range of locally-made hand- some and useful articles it will make you proud. You might even want some of them for yourself, those gorgeous, delicate, silk scarves by Anne Gaze, for in- stance; or satiny wooden pulltoys, or flying mobile geese and swans; a wooden wild-flower press; that jade putter. But it’s the food on display that made it a place for Eleanor to check out. I knew about Okanagan fruit leathers, having bought them at Granville Market, and | knew about the small special- the everlasting seagull- ly cannery near Nanaimo, but | did not know about that awfully good chocolate that comes from Mayne Island nor about the Summerland syrups, and the Sun Dew juices out of Okanagan Falls. Wallner’s seasoned mustards were also news to me — they originate in West Vancouver — as were the honey soaps and = candles from Victoria. And | certain- ly had no idea that Keremeos was the home of a champion hot pepper specialist. Think- ing of Keremeos’ main street in the middle of August, though, it seems perfectly logical! Actually, food often makes the best gift, especially when you don’t know peo- ple’s taste in ornaments and hobbies. I mean, even the ones who have everything aren’t going to turn up their noses at one more tin of wild, rare Chanterelle mushrooms RECIPE WINNER THE WINNER of our recape contest this week is A.W. If you come in off Burrard, it prac- tically faces you as you come up the stair near the Japanese reslaurant. The first time | visited, | didn’t have enough time to see everything, and had to go back a second time to make more notes about wildflower honey and home-made herb- ed vinegars. There are great jars of pot-pourri, one of them smelling of sun-warmed strawberries, another of our British Columbia forests, that would make the most hardened expatriate home- Sick. The labelling and packag- ing are most attractive, a soft beige-and-taupe combination of background colors, done especially on an ancient let- terpress for these ‘‘Made-in B.C.’” stores. The Mayne Island chocolates are the shape of crayfish, and come stacked in miniature replicas of fish- boxes, with ‘“‘Catch of the Day’’ printed on the side. The Big Find, for me, was the dried red hot peppers, both whole and ground, of- fered in those stoppered carafes in graduated sizes. The best part of all was the cook-book that 1s available alongside them, called ‘*Keremeos Harvest’’, writ- ten by Ingnd Fawcett, who, with her family has compiled an irresistible collection of Finding an original ‘Made in B.C. hot stuff from all over the world. 1} can hardly wait to try a ‘*Keremeos Harvest Casserole’>, with rice and cheese and ground beef and home-made tomato sauce, jazzed up with garlic and fresh chile peppers, curry and pecans. Wow. And if you aren’t into sizzling hot, Mrs. Fawcett describes how to buy and how to handle the ones that will flavor without singeing your tongue. Just wall.
