MAIL Box————— Hospital did a fine job Dear Editor: In the current mood, when most of what we hear regarding our hospitals tends to be of a negative nature, allow me to present the other side of the coin. Recently, 1 underwent neurosurgery at Lions Gate Hospital. The operation was very successful due to the combined efforts of Dr. J. Padilla and his team of dedi- cated people who performed a difficult surgical procedure, brilliantly, They were the “main players.” of course. but } would be amiss in not mentioning everyone else | came in contact with prior to the surgery and during my recovery, AL these people. performed a multitude of tasks in an able, kind and professional manner. I am confident that, in time, Lions Gate Haspitad can and will reclaim its place as one of the finest hospitals in’ the province. TLORMOTIVE SERVICE LTD. . 174 Pemberton Ave., North Van: - PRIVATE & INSURANCE REPAI2S * Quality Workmanship § . 985-7455 ) | Wednesday, November 15, 2000 — North Shore News - 9 eB Ted White, | Candidate CANADIAN THE LIBERAL LEGACY During the 1993 election campaign, Jean Chretien labelled supporters of the Reform Party "extremists" for want- ing to balance the budget, even though Reform's “Zero In Three” plan made NO CUTS to medicare or higher education } funding. Seven years later the Prime Minister is boasting about a balanced budget despite having done exactly what he implied he would not do, and Reform said should never be done. instead of eliminating Government waste, he chose to cut billions from medicare transfers, and dramatically increase taxes, in order to maintain Liberal pork-barrel spending on poaliti- cally motivated handouts and grants. in the process the Liberals spent enormous amounts of your money on the building of such things as fountains and golf courses in Liberal Ridings, and on handouts to companies like Bombardier and WalMart. While they engaged in this orgy of spend- ing, our federal debt ballooned to more than $560 billion, making it abundantly clear that the real extremists were the Liberals. So it's not unreasonable to ask, “Where are all the Liberals who told me in 1993 that balancing the bud- get was extreme? Are they happy with the way their Leader deceived the pub- lic on such a critical issue?" THEN CAME 1997 During the 1997 election campaign, Jean Chretien called supporters of the Reform Party “fearmongers" for pointing out that the Canada Pension Plan was becoming insolvent. Our “Super RRSP" proposal to replace the CPP was attacked by the Prime Minister, who unashamedly misled voters by stating that we wanted to risk the retirement savings of Canadians in the stock market. But right after the 1997 election Mr Chretien suddenly admitted that CPP was in troubie, and implemented a phased in set of increases in CPP pre- miums that will top out at around 9.5% of earnings in just a few years. The Liberal Government also established a new gov- ernment department to “invest” a percent- age of the CPP fund into the stock market. So it's not unreasonable to ask "Where are the Liberals who told us in 1997 that there was no problem with the CPP, and implied that they would never invest Canadians' pension money in the stock market We were upfront and honest about the CPP problems - are those Libera! supporters happy with the way their Leader yet again deceived the public on such a critical issue?" THE YEAR 2000 And then this year, just a few months ago, Jean Chretien was calling supporters of the Canadian Alliance "greedy" for demanding tax reductions. He said that people who didn't like paying the taxes in Canada should-simply leave, yet barely three weeks. ago, just prior to dissolving. ’ Parliament, he suddenly tabled a mini- budget. based on tax relief. As usual, his. efforts were half measures instead of the teal thing, but the “greed* of a few months ~ ago appears to have suddenly become ©: Liberal policy. So it's not unreasonable -to ask "Where are the Liberals who backed Mr Chretien's position that tax relief was only for the greedy? Are they happy that their Leader once again said one thing and did another? Can they ever again trust a word he says?" THE ELECTION SMEAR And now, during the 2000 election cam- paign, Mr Chretien has launched the *two- tier-smear” in his efforts to avoid a mean- ingful discussion about the reform of our medicare system. He arrogantly accuses the Canadian Alliance of “wanting to destroy medicare” when he is the one who has caused the near destruction of the system by cutting billions from the health care budget. Just as was the case with balancing the budge, fixing the Canada Pension Plan, and initiating tax religf, the Canadian Altiance is identifying the prob- lems and telling the truth about the appalling state of medicare. While we have promised to restore the funding, and guarantee stable funding for the future, Mr Chretien spouts platitudes about protect- ing health care while offering absolutely no solutions. All the signals of a snow job are present again in this election, especialiy since last Monday when Health Minister Allan Rock finally admitted that there is already two- tier health care in Canada. He also confirmed that there is a private hos- pital (The Shouldice Hernia Hospital) in his own Riding - you can even book your hernia operation on the Internet at http://www.shouldice.coml!! So get ready for a mighty flip-flop on the Liberal commitment to medicare (now there's an oxymoron) over the coming months, espo- cially if we are unlucky enough to suffer that Party's re-election as Government. THE RECORD Any objective analysis of the Liberal record uncovers pienty of serious flip-flops in policy such as the ones listed above, along with major broken promises like get- ting rid of the GST. In fact, all of the evi- dence points to a Leader and a Party that cannot be trusted to keep promises, to tell the truth about the state of the Nation, or to stick to its policy positions. it has all the appearances of a Party devoid of princi- ples, arrogant, and lacking in new ideas... - in the final analysis, if you voted Liberal in 1993, only to realize that you ‘| had been deceived - that's bad. if you” _ voted Libera! again In 1997, only to real- ize that you had been deceived again - that's worse, much, much worse... So please, don’t let yourself be deceived again. While Mr Chretien has blatantly. abandoned core Libera! policies, and broken a host of solemn promises over . the past decade, my Party has stuck to the same principles and policies. We have been up-front and truthful about the problems we face as a country and what we need to do to fix those prob- ‘lems, and we have changed the face of politics in. Canada. : So come on over. Vote Canadian. Alliance.on November. ’ 27th and ‘you'll. be helping to elect-a -Government with: principies, ' with a carefully thought out set of policies for: ‘the start of the new century, and which Is genuinely open to public input between elections.
