BRITISH HAIR designer Trevor
Sorbie re-introduced the looks of
the 1950s to stylists, salon owners
and trend watchers with a two-
hour hair show recently.

“Hair today is more stylized.
Women want to look feminine
again,’’ said Sorbie. ‘‘The looks
are reminiscent of our favorite
movie stars like Brigitte Bardot
and Kim Novak who exemplify
these sexy, romantic styles.”’

On stage, the looks ranged from
tightly sculpted curls placed with
purpose on the cheek or forehead;
to back-brushed bouffants; to long
and wispy veil-like strands of hair
flowing from a shorter feather-cut
base.

Asymmetry was key to many of
these looks, adding just enough
flirt to the one-eye-covered
designs. A popular technique is
razor cutting — versatile for shav-
ing the nape and precision cutting
or tapering longer hair.

Between cutting demonstrations
models stormed the stage in Bet-
ty-boop curls, beatnik shags,
clay-sculpted mannequin-like styles
and oriental-themed hair exten-
sions — the revival of old trends
being part of fashion’s life cycle.

Sorbie believes that creative hair
dressing comes from_ blending
techniques from the 1980s with
looks from past eras to achieve
new results for today’s hottest hair
looks.
