If BMW was excited about its Mini, it was
perhaps even prouder of its new M3 coupe —-
a taut-handling super-car with more than 300
horsepower under its hood. Track tests I’ve
done with this car prove it has performance
thar not too many drivers will be able to
exploit. Best thing about cars like this is that
they have incredible margins of safety to back
up exceptional get-up-and-go. The M3 is the
latest in 2 Jeng line of M cars from BMW that
have all gained classic status. When vou own a
BMW M-car, you've got something very spe-
cial indeed.

Also from BMW was a concept sparts road-
ster with the best electronic system (telematics)
interface I'd ever uied. A single console-_-
mounted joystick controlled everything from
Internet capability to the stereo system — and
lots more in between, Offering intuitive opera-
ton and non-distracting function controls, the
system will probably show up on future BMWs
— nor to mention competitor's cars.

Volkswagen launched a revised Passat at the
Paris show and considered the event important
_enough to have several corporate luminaries on
hand for the unveiling. The new Passat features
more chrome accenting than its predecessor,
possibly to reinforce the car’s upscale status.
The 200! Passat boasts all kinds of engineering
and cosmetic upgrades, burt to use an old
~ phrase, you ain't seen nothing yet.

En route to the Paris show, I stopped off at
VW's Wolfsburg headquarters to drive a Passat

with an cight-cylinder engine — and this'is just ;

a hint of what VW will be bringing us over the
next few vears. Long famed for high-quality
economy cars, VW will scon compete at the
highest ievel of the luxury sedan market.

One building at the Paris show was devoted
to the automobile and the Internet and fea-
tured booths promoting European auto-related
Web sites and other areas of communications
technology. [t was a fascinating glimpse into
the strength of Internet sales and information
sites in France and other European countries
and the building just hummed with activity all
through the show. While people still prefer to
buy their car from a real hive salesperson, they
don’t hesirare to research planned purchases
exhaustively on the Web — in Europe, as in
North America. .

While we are on the subject of auto show: Sy
mark your calendar for the Pacific . -
International Auto and Light Truck Show,
planned for BC Place Stadium from Saturday,
March 31 to Saturday, April 7 next year.

Last year's show was sold out and some:

_ late exhibitor requests had to be turned down, -

such was its popularity. Attendance was up by
10%. The show is slightly shorter than last .
year’s in terms of days, but is open fer the
same number of hours. From what I hear on
the automotive grapévine, there will be more
new cars, vans and trucks there than ever
before...
