8 — Sunday, August 15, 1999 — North Shore News lan count Dear Editor: After reading both Noel “Wright’s and Leo Knight's columns, I feel chat 1 must make my feelings known, First, lam amazed that the old-time — genevation — of Canadians are not screaming their heads otf about a gov- ernment that is clearly anti- Canadian. It is an unhappy sit- uation when Canadians who have many generations here are now the visible minority. Who will be left 20 remember the Canada we all loved? What about our heritage, our cul- ture, our traditions, our lan- guage, and even our religion? Evervihiag that is Canadian is being thrown out, while the neweomers are wel- comed, and encouraged to keep their language, traditions and customs while ours are thrown out because it may offend them. This was a Christian country but now we can’t even say) “Merry Christmas” anymorc. It is north shore news MAIL Box truly sad. On top of all this, the gov- ernment has decreed that we do nor ask these phoney refugees if they had a criminal record. For a start they com- mitted a criminal act by the method of getting here. We now have another 100 people on our medical rolis tree of charge, when there is a wait- ing list of months for surgery. How come they can pay $36,000 to get here and MacDonalds are giving them free meals? These people are getting more rights than we who have lived here for gener- ations. The Canadian immi- gration policies are destroying the country we love. T appeal to all Canadians to rise up, make vour thoughts known, write ietters to the government, Mr. Chretien, and the new immigration minister, and do not forget your MP. Brian Seward North Vancouver ritannia resident backs soil plan Dear Editor: By way of answering the concerns of your community for the increased truck traffic proposed for the Britannia Beach soit dump and treat- ment ficility Although initially opposed to this scheme largely because of problems this community of Britannia Beach has had in the past. =o with ~—s Mr. Drummond, the author of the soil dump plan, many of my fellow residents here are now in support of the plan because it will enable our vil- lage to finally emerge from our current medieval govern- ment of two employees from PriceWaterhouse, the court- Dogs don't leave ciga . Dear Editor: : ; Re: Lighthouse Park imay be ... Closed to aff-icash dogs. + Tye been walking my dogs in Lighthouse Park for i5 ycars (y alvays have two dogs in my family), and I too have noticed _ some ‘degradation of the park in those years, but rot until appointed receiver/manag- er’s of Mr. Drummond’s holdings here. The transter of title would be be facilitated by Mr. Drummond's gener- ous offer to transfer owner- ship of the housing in Britannia Beach to the B.C. Housing Commission which will help us establish some: form of strata title co-op, although what’s really need- ed, and what folks in most municipalities take for grant- ed, is incorporation. Perhaps we can achieve that in the not too distant furure. It's hard to explain what it’s like living under the aus- pices of a feudal landlord, but suffice it to say that when I filming was allowed several years ago, We dog people are quict, orderly, clean, and friendly. The dogs stay mainiy to the paths, but even when they do range slightly into the woods, they leave no traces, unlike humans’ heavy-footed blundering, took my concerns to our for- mer MP, Herb Grubel, sever- al years agu, the lauer com- pared it with the apartheid of his former residence in Africa. If West Van is concerned about 26 truckloads per day with this proposal than I am curious to know what you would think about the pro- posed 1,500 family home development just: given pre- liminary zpproval for the adjacent property to Britannia Beach. How might you feel about an additional 1,500) cars going through your comnu- nity? We're against it for an infinite amount of common sense reasons beginning with 1 have asked = West Vancouver for years to please shut the gates at night, and to ban smoking year round in the park, because much of the degradation is in the form of cigarette butts, wrappers, cans ~ and bottles, none of which are icft by dogs. So NOW OPEN! . - Parkgate Community Health Centre the highway traffic. Squamish and Pemberton might not feel the same way though as they are dealing with heavy unemployment in the resource sector right now. I propose that we help each other achieve common- sense goals related to the overall quality of all the com- munities of Howe Sound. Seton North Vancouver The North Shore Health Region is pleased to announce that Community Health Services are now available at the Parkgate Community no mere Workers free to reject union way Dear Editor: On behalf of BCAA staff members (Certain Employees) at the Park Royal and Park & Tilford Service Centre loca- tions, TP write this lecter in rebuttal to your Aug. 4, 1999 mailbox letrer by Sara Belvedere titled, “Decertitication move angers BCAA pickets.” A fundamental principle of the British Columbia Labour Relations Code is thar employees are entitied to freely choose whether they want union representation. During the course of the entire decertification cam- paign by the Certain Employees, the union and its supporters have failed to acknowledge the simple fact that a majority of emptoyees at both North Shore BCAA loca- tions no longer wish represen- tation from this union. The union and its supporters demand that others respect the wishes of a majority of the employees when it suits their purpose. However, these same people refuse to respect the wishes of a majority of employees when there is a decision with which they do hor agree. When the union organized the BCAA locations on the North Shore, certification required only that the union obtain a majority level of sup- port in those owo particular locations. The union was not required to seck the support of all BCAA locations across the province. After certitica- tion, the two North Shore locations became part of a bar- gaining unit. which includes cight other BCAA locations throughout the province. The employees at the nvo North Shore BCAA locations are simply asking the Labour Relations Board to allow them to decertify from the union in exactly the same way chat the union obtained certification, by a decision of a majority of the employees at the avo par- ticular locations. It is unfair to allow a union . by simply obtaining majority support at particular locations, and at the same tine refuse to allow employees decertification unless they obtain majority support from all other unionized locations. The process for choosing union representation ought to mirror the process for decid- ing that representation by a particular union is no longer desired. Throughout the current labour dispute, members of . the union and its supporters, such as Ms. Relvedere, have used their Web site, the Labour Relations Board and- the press to make ad hominem attacks. The union’s failure to address the important issues in a reasonable manner speaks volumes about the merits of its position. This is not the sort of tactics that Certain Employees of the two North Shore B locations intend to use in respect of this matter. We would much prefer. to focus discussion on the real issue, whether the Labour Relations Board is prepared to recognize the right of employees to choose whether or not to be represented by a particular union. .
