From a convenience viewpoint, natural gas fireplaces are hard to match. Units can be turned on and off at the flick of a switch and there’s no need to haul, split or store wood. Since wood isn’t being used, there’s also no need to con- cern yourself with wood chips, bark, insects or ashes in the home. There’s also the cost advantage. According to industry experts, most people can expect to spend 11 cents an hour on average to operate a natura! gas fireplace, a fraction of what it costs to run a wood-burning unit. Chimney construction and cleaning costs are also saved and no extra premium is required on house insurance policies. Natural gas fireplace heaters have two additional advantages over heating with wood. They are significantly more efficient and, with firing rates and thermostatic control, they can provide much more even heating. Overheating commonly associated with wood burning stoves can thus be eliminated. There are basically three dif- ferent types of natural gas devices available: firelogs, fireplace heat- ers and direct-vent fireplaces. In the case of direct-vent fireplaces, some models vent through an exterior wall without the need for a vertical chimney. They can also vent from any floor opening, making them ideal for apartment and condominium buildings. Gas firelogs are designed primarily tor their decorative ef- fect and are installed in existing open fireplaces. Advantages to the homeowner include their relatively low installed cost and compact vent space requirements. The space heating effect is essentially the same as for a wood fire except gas firelogs are more consistent and can usually have their flame size adjusted. With gas fireplace heaters, fur- nace-type heat exchangers are used to heat room air with or without blowers. Some have radiant fireboxes to supply heat out the front for hard-to-heat areas such as basements. me || ora “North Shore Regency Deuler! a Frank lantorno i Sales & Service f on the North Shore } for 23 years 985-7691 | pgr. 667-7775 * 1 LOCATION ONLY x OFF REGULAR PRICES ON FLOOR MODEL STOCK. “AS 1S” “WHERE IS” (selected models only.)
