40 - Wednesday, May 24, 1989 - North Shore News Students can study in Brazil, Argentina INTERCULTURE CANADA, an international student exchange organization, is currently accepting applications from students across the country. This not-for-profit, charitable organization is organizing year- long placements for students, aged 15 to 18, in numerous countries, including Australia, Argentina, Brazil and Japan. Departure for these destinations will take place between January and March of 1990. Some semester placements are also available. During the experience abroad, participants live with a carefully selected volunteer host family while studying in a local high school. The result is total immer- sion into a new culture, language and lifestyle. Denise Otis, coordinator for In- terculture Canada’s Sending Pro- gram, marvels at the results of such an exchange. ‘‘At the end of each cycle,’’ she explains, ‘‘we see our students come home with such a wealth of knowledge, new skills and first-hand experiences. I just wish all students were aware of the opportunity to study abroad.’’ Participstion fees are com- parable to the amoust normally spent on an adolescent over an Il-month period. Financial assistance is available. Interculture Canada is a member of AFS [Intercultural Programs, the world’s largest international high school exchange network, es- tablished in 1947 and currently operating in 66 countries.
