train with his group.

At end of season celebra-
tions voach Haines badly
wanted to acknowledge her
pluck, so he invented the
“Dolphin Award,” given to

the athlete that tried the
hardest.

He presented it to her the
same evening trophies were
given to such famous athletes
as Mark Spitz and needless to
sav she was absolutely thrilled
at the recognition. (When
interviewed many years later
she wonld say that this tro-
phy was the most important
she ever received. )

The following year the
swimmer returned to Santa
Clara much to the surprise of
the coaches and expressed her
desire to keep on training.

As the season progressed
the staff began to notice
something. This physically
small individual started to
grow and mature. Gradually
her times started te improve.

In 1968 Claudia Kolb left
the Mexico Olympic Games
with nwo gold medals in two
of the toughest events in
swimming — the 200 indi-

vidual medley and 400 indi-
vidual medley.

One definition of charac-
ter: “Whar vou have left
inside after everything out-
side of yourself has been
taken away.”
