om) AOC M) OLIVER Cromwell killed the King and “turned the world upside down,” a Biblical expression then worked into an anthem. His dictatorship was sup- ported by odd fanatics of every stripe. There were the Levellers, the Agirators, the Diggers, the Seekers, Ranters, and Muggletonians, all of whom finally found themselves at the receiving end. The same thing is happen- ing here. We too have our Levellers and Ranters. But whether they can be over- come is moot. They set the ace, be they pressure groups ike the Canadian Jewish Congress, or the violence- prone Anti-Racist Action. In Cromwell’s day, dissi- Dear Editor: I have become increasingly distressed and appalled by the ‘ arrogance of the 15-member North Shore Health Board ~ (NSHB) at the April 10 meet- ing. The meeting revealed a self-serving, , shortsighted board that had neither the knowledge nor experience in hospital management to do its job competently. This was clearly evident in the board’s reluctance to answer straightforward ques- tions posed by the audience. Dear Editor: Several weeks ago, Lynette Best, in her usual friendly, warm manner, handed me and others gold pins in recog- nition for service years at Lions Gate Hospital. ‘My own was for 25 years _ service so I feel I can write with creditability about Mrs. Best and her accomplishments at LGH during her 15 years as vice-president of nursing. LGH has had the wonder- fal fortune of a lady who has made dramatic changes in our health facility, easing us from a local family hospital into what is now a highly technica! forward-looking hospital that receives respect from the community it serves and top KEN BAXTER LAWYER 25 Years Expelience dents could be whipped through the streets, tied to a cart. Or have their heads put ona spike. We are now more refined. But the sentiments are the same. That’s why we now have opinion crime: federal “hate laws,” plus the NDP’s mis- named Human Rights Act, a new kind of “Holy Office” for those who don’t salute _ the right gods. Many public bodies follow the same band. The fate of Paul Fromm is a prime example. He is an Onrario teacher whe has never been charged with any crime, hate or otherwise. But he opposes immigration and multiculturalism, which can now be a mortal sin. He puts out a newsletter and makes speeches. So B’Nai Brith — a Jewish chari- ty, of all things — conr- lained to Fromm's school ard. Exit Fromm. Not that he had talked about such things in the adult classes he was teaching. He was politically incorrect. And that was enough. Finis and fired. Applause from the Levellers. That sort of thing is not confined to the lower eche- lons. Last year the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that The chairwoman replied that the board members were only policy makers. I ask, “How can a board with no evident experience in medical care and hospital administration deal with hospital policy?” Moreover, how can the provincial government be so naive as to let this board and its director run rampant over what had been an efficiently and effectively run hospital. Board members are common- ly elected for their compe- tence in the field, ia this : _ Loss of Best lamented accreditation for care deliver- ance at a government level. She has done this not only with skill and warmth but has at all times been accessible to any employce who approached her. She is blessed with the knack of being a fair negotia- ter. April 4 was a sad day for most of us at LGH. We have lost a fine person and an out- standing leader. T hope the public will rec- ognize the dedication of Mrs. Best to LGH. By al! reports, Ross, like Fromm, was an excellent teacher who had never opened his mouth on controversial matters in. school. The court said he had the freedom to write. But he could not be a teacher as well. The world turned upside down! Militant homosexuals, extreme leftists and radical feminists are free to spout their stuff in the schools and be patted on the head for it. An article in a small Toronto publication put it rather well. “Speak out against liberal stronghold ideas like multi- culturalism and immigration and you wilt quickly be com- pared to Hitler and labelled a racist. “Those on the left will hunt you like a dog. Why? Because they are strong believers in free speech, but only when it applies to them. For everyone else, they prefer censorship... “If you do not buy into the liberal mantra you can be fired from your place of employment. Does that seem like freedom of speech to you? Ir should not, because it is not.” The David Lethbridge case is an example of how it’s OK to be a lefust fanatic. He is a teacher at Okanagan College. He is also the local Communist Party of Canada candidate in the coming elcc- tion, and spends mest of his time hunting “racists.” He has crowed like a cock about how he helped get Fromm fired. And has spoken at conferences organized by the ARA rabble. Does the college take exception to his activities? Not so you would notice. He marches forward on his mis- sion, chanting his mantra. Students follow his Pied Piper act. To cheers from a student mob he cculd even drop his pants in public and “moon” other speakers. A teal New Age intellectual. The Ranters and Levellers have descended on Canada from coast to coast. Have you noticed any big cam- paign in our media about the B.C, Human Rights Act? Most of them hardly know or care that it exists. They are too busy studying the Ranters’ bible. Recently, the Fredericton instance, hospital administra- tion. These board members were neither elected, nor were they selected for their knowl- edge, experience or wisdom in the field. It was my understanding that the NSHB was to work with and communicate to medical staff to ensure that LGH patient care remained high on the list of priorities, while still running the hospital efficiently. None would disagree that financial restraint and belt- tightening are needed. However, firing, quite arbi- trarily, well-respected and. qualified CEO Lynette Best, with 18 months left on her contract hardly reflects sound policy.
