NORTH VANCOUVER HEDDY Anderson of North Vancouver offers this open letter to Ali who deliv- ers the North Shore News. She met Ali recently for the first time. Dear A! nk you, for your extreme kindness and concern rendered me, 3 senior and total stranger, on Friday noon, Feb. 28. Thad being shopping in various stores on Lonsdale, filling my little cart to capacity so - that a plastic bag containing the ingredients for the week- end meals had to be secured on the outside of the cart. The heavy load made the walk home pretty wobbly, to say the least. I didn't notice the plastic bag deteriorate and deposit my suppers on the curb. And here's where you come in, Ali. Apparently, you had watched my struggle from a distance, busy delivering the North Shore News from your van. Guessing that the display . of food sitting on the curb might belong to me, you adroitly procured the promise of two young ladies to keep an eye on things until you could catch up with me who by then was one and a half a blocks down he road. Ali, the urgency and con- cern I read in your voice and face brought a lump to my throat. A little shy, you explained that I reminded you of the mom you hadn’t seen for 19 years and, that it wasn’t the value of the food that con- cerned you, but the thought of yet another strenuous trip to the store. So young and yet so caring and thoughtful. Thank you, Ali. You were raised well. May you and your Mom be blessed with the good things in life. You deserve it! Gil Yard, are pleased to show off the roomy new detachment building. "NEWS photo Mixe Wat By Anna Marie D'Angelo News Reporter THE North Vancouver RCMP recently tackled one of its toughest jobs yet. It moved its entire staff of 255 into a new build- ing on the corner of East 14th Street and St. Georges. And it was done without any “down time.” Although the move across the lane was not a cake walk — the new phone system was not work- ing properly, files were temporarily impossible to find, computers had problems — no one in the force looked back at the dilapidated old building. “The bottom line is that this is a beautiful build- ing. What we are experiencing i is minor hitches that come with a new operation,” said Insp. Gordon McRae, who is charge of the uniform or patrol offi- cers. The new RCMP headquarters cost $19.5 mil- lion. The building contains 68,000 square feet (6, 7 sq. m) of space. The earthquak proof build- a named after reticed North Vancouver City administrator Gerry Brewer, also houses the head- quarters of the North and West Vancouver Emergency Measures Program. Jailed people from North Vancouver stayed in cells at the West Vancouver Police station while the problem was being remedied.
