Search is on for cash to buy building By Michael Becker News Editor DEEP Cove drummer Roger Baird is a man on a mission. Baird needs to raise a quick half million bucts to renew an artistic love affair. Baird and trombonist- composer Ralph Eppel, sup- ported by numercus volun- teers, worked eight years to shape the Gless Slipper venue into a showcase for jazz, improvised music, poetry, film, dance and visual art. The arts venue was destroyed by fire on Dec. 20. Paird has identified an ideal building for a new Glass Slipper in the Victory Square area of downtown Vancouver, The Nortl: Vancouver- based Musart Cultural Society would like to buy it. A benefit show for a new Glass Slipper is set for 6 p.m., - Seb. 9 at the Vogue Theatre. The lineup includes Gypsalero with John Revchman, Sal Ferraras and friends, Celso Machado, Brad Turner Quartet, Coco Alcorn, Christine Duncan and some surprise guests. Said Baird, “It was a place where musicians were able to play their own music. The music was tremendously excit- ing.” sird said focal musicians are devastated by the loss of the Glass Slipper. “Every time Isee some- body they say there’s just a huge hele. The Slipper was the one place that every musi- cian loved to play and it was- n’t because they made a lot of money there. The room was listener-oriented. People would come in there to listen, not to pick up women or men or yak their heads off.” The first Glass Slipper was located at [1th and Main from 1988 to 1993. The second, formerly an old church, sat behind the Biltmore Hotel on Kingsway. The club seated 120.
