SH at 100 Years of Cowboy Stories, Edited by Ted Sione, Red Deer College Press, pp. 223, paper | EXPECTED cowboy stories of the penny- dreadful variety. By Barbara Black Contributing Writer But editor Ed Stone goss beyond the formula Wester to find some excellent stories which explore different facets of the Wild West. As he explains in his introduction, the cowboy story has evolved from the purely fictional “Virginian” series created by Owen Wister, to a more realistic, insightful kind of writing penned by. authors who were cowboys themselves. “The cowboy, symbol of freedom and indepen- dence, is treated in a variety of ways in this collection. The western storytelling tradition comes alive in Omar Barker's Trail Fever, where characters named Rusty and Brazos Bill wrestle over their respective degrees of cowboy machismo. The language is pure western lingo: “The only wahoo not mud-caked from boot heel to brisket was Old Tuck Fargus, the cross- eyed cook.” On the other hand. Sandoz’s “The Girl in the Humbert" and Stegner’s “Carrion Spring.” both sto- ries chronicling the hardships of homesteading, joia the ranks of “serious” literature. The collection ends aptly with Pam Houston's “Cowboys are my Weakness,” a look behind the Marlboro Man mystique. Overall, the book was a refreshing surprise for a cowboy skeptic tike me.
