NEW MEXICO is becoming
a popular destination for art
lovers and warm-weather
seekers.

Albuquerque, New Mexico's
largest city (pop. 400,000), has a
good science and technology muse-
um and several important native
Indian exhibitions, including the
Indian Pueblo Cultural Center.

- Its charming Old Town recalls
the city’s days as a Spanish posses-
sion. It is also a good base if you
want to explore northern New
Mexico, Santa Fe, the state capital, is
95 km to the north.

Taos, 112 km_ north of Santa Fe.
has long been a favorite retreat for
writers and artists. You can still see
the bathroom windows painted by
D.H. Lawrence when he stayed in
Taos in the 1920s, and a local hotel,
La Fonda de Taos in the town's cen-
tral plaza, has an exhibition of 10

“erotic” paintings Lawrence did,
which were banned in Britain in
1929 as obscene. (Admission is
US$3.) There's also Eske’s, a brew
pub that serves a beer made with
chili peppers.

For an educational vacation, how
about learning Spanish in Mexico?

Cuernavaca, a charming holiday
town about 80 km south of smoggy
Mexico City, is home'to several
Spanish-immersion schools. The
largest is the Center for Bilingual
Multicultural Studies, with classes
starting every Monday.

A two-week program that
includes lessons in Mexican history
