of a building. They are fre-
quently the cause of building
failure in earthquakes, as they
are not always braced against
the sideways motion of an
earthquake.

We suspect there are many
houses on the North Shore with
cripple walls that have only exterior
siding or stucco to serve as bracing.

This would probably ne: be suf-
fictent in a moderate to strong
earthquake, and major structural
damage could result.

Fortunately. installing effective
bracing can be done as a retrofit.

First of all, you will have to
examine your house around the
crawl space to see if the cripple
wall has any interior sheathing. If
not, most homeowners with a few
tools should be able to install ply-
wood sheathing with little difficul-
ly.

You may not need to sheath the
entire length of the wall, but all
four corners and a third or more of
each side should be done to
strengthen against earthquake
motion from all directions.
