“oi «Vancouver Monday © night y meeting heard North Shore columnist Doug Collins condemned for what one speaker News said was Collins’ negative effect on the community. Lionel Kenner also said that three councillors should not have accepted Canada 125 medals awasded to citizens of North Van- couver, because Collins had also teceived one of the medals. “It is- appalling thatoa hatemonger like Collins should receive an award from the Gov- ernor General. It is my view that “the Governor General was deceiv- ed,” said Kenner. He asked that council dissociate itself from the three awards given ‘to members, write to the Governer General informing him of this ac- tion, ‘‘and also of the fact that on a previous occasion council passed a motion deploring Collins’ activi- ties.’” But Collins responded, saying that immigration would create ‘‘a mish-mash Third World Canada — a stir-fry country.” ! He said immigrants cost -tax- payers millions of dollars a year, ‘and bring tuberculosis into the country. . Some of his comments were cheered by citizens'in the gallery. He said that stating his views on immigration made him worthy of -a medal. “If -Prime Minister Mackenzie King were stil!’ around he would “have . given me - the Order of © NORTH VANCOUVER CITY COUNCIL _? by Stephen Wisenthal Canada, let alone the Com- memorative Medal,"’ said Collins. He said he was chosen for a medal by a non-political panel, “so what it boiled down to was that Collins was choice.”* In. a prepared presentation to council, Collins called’ Kenner “insufferably arrogant and conde-- scending....He says. that when he arrived in Canada he was struck by the rawness and lack of cultur- al sophistication of this country, -: especially here in the West.
