Diva de livers so set Jessye Norman CD celebrates 20th anniversary Philips CD #422 893-2. Jessye Norman — mezzo-soprano. Various orchestras and accompanists. HIS IS a bargain-priced two-CD set that constitutes a “best of” collection released last year in celebration of Jessye Norman’s 20th anniversary with Philips. And it’s important to mention that Norman, who performed in Vancouver yesterday at the Or- pheum Theatre, has a lot of pull around the Philips offices regard- ing control of her own stuff and she’s particularly happy with this package. You will be too if you're a fan of Norman’s roundly resonant mez- zo. There are 30 examples of that here, ranging across a musical medley of classical, pops, gospel and show tunes. But fortunately, there hasn't been too much mixing and mat- ching going on so that each CD more or less separates the straight classical from the pops, gospel and show tunes, allowing you to suit Ross MacDonald CLASSICAL MUSIC These two CDs are a veritable cross-section of Norman’s entire career. The first CD contains the pops, gospel and show tunes, 4&4 These two CDs are a veritable cross-section of Norman's entire Career . your taste or mood appropriately. The Georgia-born Norman has been at this a iong time, beginning her professional life as a member _ of the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 1969 singing Elisabeth in Wagner's bombastic tale of redemption and the Holy Grail, Tannhauser. As a result, Norman toured ex- tensively in the ‘70s throughout the United States, South America, Australia, Canada and Europe, garnering heaps more invitations to return wherever she appeared. She’s obviously been listening, too - she performed in Vancouver yesterday as a joint presentation of the Vancouver Recital Society and Vancouver Opera. oF - highlighted by popular favorites like Ail the Things You Are, With a Song in My Heart, Amazing Grace, Do Lawd, Oh Do Lawd and He's Got the Whole World in His Hands, Like so many divas, however, Norman has a knack for injecting everything she sings with a classical concoction of tight enun- ciation and rigid discipline, so that even the gospel comes across as somewhat rectally retentive. ~ This fusion of styles has proven very popular, however, as demon- strated by the overwhelming litter of similar efforts from just about . every current opera star of late — so this half of the set is likely to appeal to a much larger audience than | would normally anticipate. Classical-wise, the second CD offers a scope that's just as wide as the first with excerpts from Restauran The, management and staff would like to invite you to ‘take advantage of our special offer until June 10th, 1993.
