it is the way government goes
about administering them that

LAST TUESDAY the provincial
NDP government handed
down its budget fer the opera-
tion of British Columbia for
the next 12 months. Among
tho highlights (or lowlights) of
tax and fea hikes are sales
tax, property tax, income tax,
gas tax, and cigarette tax.
The NDP estimates that the
new taxes will generate $300
million a year.

tn a weekly random survey of more
than 500 North Shore residents, the
North Shore News survey team
asked the people: Are the tax hikes
in the provincial budget necessary?

Ot those who responded, 25.5%
said the new taxes are necessary for
the financial health of the province's
survival, 56.3% said the hikes are not
necessary. The remaining respond-
ents had no opinion on the matter,
