The first step is to get rid of excess From page 38 law's old goif clubs kept just in case you decide to take up the game, those fabric swatches col- lected when you re-covered a chair five years ago. You may recapture a lot of needed footage ty simpiy gathcr- ing up your next donation to charity. Then, it pays to take a careful fook at your bare closet. Doubt- less, you can fili much of its wasted spacz with additional shelves, racks and storage bins. If you are redesigning a bedroom closet, for example, you might consider double rows of hanging space for skirts and suit coats. If your hall closet has a loi of vertical wasted space, you can install high shelving to store in- frequentiy-used or out-of-season items. Remember that the closet dGor itself can provide additionz! clut- ter control. A shallow three- to four-inch rack with pegs on the top and crosspieces at the bottom can hold everything from the dog’s leash and umbrellas to purses and hats. Many experts recommend measuring things so your closet can hest accommodate them. Shelves less than a foot high would store folded sweaters much more neatly than if the clothes were stacked so high that the piles constantly tumbled over. And, if most of the spray bot- tles in your cleaning closet are on- ly 10 inches high, why waste space by having shelves 16 inches apart? While you are ferreting out wasted space, don’t limit your hunting grounds to inside your closet decors. Scan your entire home for nooks and craanies that can be converted to storage. Perhaps you can start with some cf the tried-and-true solu- tions. Many people, for instance, have turned the space underneath their beds into a second bureau. Some simply store sweaters, shoes or linens in large cardboard storage boxes bought in dimestores. Others build a low, wide box mounted on casters as a roll-away storage unit that can easily be withdrawn by its attached drawer pulls. This roll-away drawer can be a great toy box, capturing clutter in children’s rooms. Another good way to introduce storage to a child’s rcom is to use some of that wasted wail space. Pretty but sturdy plastic baskets can be mounted ca walls to reduce the need for boxes and baskets on the floor. A loft bed is a magical place for any child; it also leaves a lot of floor space free for play and additional storage. Wall space is an important storage resource in rooms for people of al] ages. A spice rack on a kitchen wall provides color and also saves valuable cupboard space for other items. Pegboards were invented to help organize pliers and screwdrivers on basement walls and garden tools in the garage. The Shakers used to line their rooms with rows of wooden pers ter hanging, an idea than can be supplemented with hooks, baskets and an occa- sional shelf, Hats and purses can be displayed and stored at the same time, creating a mosaic of house- See Bins page 41 y” *Reg. book price. ¢ Pea bookie OUR GUARANTEE OF QUALITY AS products at Color Your World ore sold with on uncenditiond —_ if you find a comparoLle paint or the some wallazvering at a lower quarortee of quolty.
