Fight furnes HILE PUBLIC aad government officials are becoming more eavironmentally aware — addressing such issues as pulp mill dioxins, sewage disposal, outdoor burning and garbage recycl- ing — one of the biggest offenders, 1ae motor vehicle, has continued to pollute victually unchecked. The Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) has taken a first step toward improving Lower Mainland air quality by announcing its plan to reinstate mandatory vehicle inspection to ensure that emission control systems are being properly maintain- ed. A recent report revealed thai carber monoxide levels in some parts of the region exceed federal standards, with motor vehicles being identified as the principal source of air pollution. The GVRD’s initiative should reduce motor velicle emissions by approximately 15 per cent, and federal standards for new vehicles should reduce emissions by a further 30 per cent over the next five years and 45 per cent over the next 10. But while these initiatives are important steps in controlling air pollution, individuals can iake the ini- tiative to reduce the amount of poison discharged into our air a step further through an increased use of peblic transit, car pooling and riding a bicycle or walking to work. Whether it is the air we breathe, the water we drink and swim in or the land we inhabit, our environment is worth protecting, and each of us can make a dif- ference.
