RELAX, , TAKE IT EASY Pre- ANXIETY TAKES its toll on the whole body, not just the mind, ac- cording to research by a physical education professor at the Penn- sylvania State University. _Especially during wedding plan- ning, the stress can mount until it reaches epic proportions as the big day approaches. “If people only worried between their cars, there would be no dif- ficulty,’’ says Dorothy Harris. “*But people’s worries show up in their colons, their blood pressure and all the hot spots. We think with our whole bodies, not just our heads.”” Harris’ research, in conjunction with Robert T. Durall, a graduate student in the sports psychology program, centers on mental tehearsals by athletes, but the principle is much the same at wed- dings — getting ready for a judged performance. In the research, members of the men’s gymnastics team were tested in vault and floor exercises and members of the women’s team were tested in vault and balance Be ready for trouble to strike Fight water slob nig with wine and other’ beverages are common water-soluble spills. Each of them was instructed to visualize his or her rehearsal routines and to depress a timing device when finished. During the mental rehearsal, the subjects had electrodes attached to their upper legs and forearms and their heart rates were measured. While lying down in a relaxed state, the subjects showed a physi- cal activation which proved Harris’ point that people ‘‘think with their whole bodies.’” No significant difference was discovered between the times of mental and actual rehearsal for any activities other than the vault. Harris feels that people can learn to regulate the physical reac- tions that are triggered by the mind. The implications move beyond the field of athletics, although Harris feels that athletics are perfectly suited to research of this nature. COWPLETE ety So when the rigors of wedding planning seem to be getting the better, it is important to slow down and try to relax. As people's worries can manifest themselves through the body, worrying about that ache or pain will only make matters worse. Getting tense and worried over a wedding is perfectly natural — it is important not to let the situation get out of hand. Athletes are trained to deal with the anxiety, Harris explains, Dut the principles are the same for everyone. “The idea extends to everyone,”’ she says. ‘The anxicty can mean anything from blanking out on an exam to forgetting someone's name in a nervous social setting (such as a wedding). “It's important for us to clear the flack out of the wiring in the system. People can be taught to regulate themselves.”’ DING PHOTOG: Custom packages starting at $245.00 For details and appointment please call JAN 3.
