News sponsors first N. Shore Biathlon |

THE NORTH Shore News will
co-sponsor the first annual North
Shore Biathlon scheduled to be
held Sunday, June [4 at 8:30 a.m.

The event, which is designed for
both recreational and competitive
swimmers, runners and triathletes,
combines a one-kilometre pool
swim with a 10-kilometre run.

It is being organized by biathlon
co-founders, the North Shore
YMCA and the North Shore
Winter Club (NSWC).

The. swim vector of the race will
be held... «3 25-metre NSWC
pool.

Race co-directors Donna
McKenzie and Sally Willis have

scheduled four heats to avoid
possible pool crowding. Swimmers
will be placed in lanes correspon-
ding to tieir abilities.

Biathlon organizers recommend
that participants be enrolled in an
active fitness program, such as
aerobics, running or swimming,
that involves participation at least
three times per week or more.

Training requirements depend
on level of fitness and ability in
each sport.

Some basic preparation princi-
ples:

* Patience avoids injury. Limit
increases in workout distances to
10 per cent per week.
