The former centre, on the origi- nal 1913 ferry terminal site at 14th Street in West Vancouver, will be preserved as part of the Ambleside-By-The-Sea project. The Blue Bus system started in 1915 with a seven-passenger Pierce Arrow touring car that connected with the ferries and now has 33 buses and a staff of 60. The Hon. Rita Johnston, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Transit, and West Vancouver Mayor Derrick Humphreys of- ficially opened the new centre Oct. 31. In her remarks, the minister thanked the mayor, a director of BC Transit, for his untiring efforts over the past five years in bringing this project to a successful conclu- sion, She went on to compliment the West Vancouver system on its rep- utation for service and efficiency, “It’s second to none,"’ she said. “Last year, 1985/86, the system carried over two and three-quarter million revenue passengers with a higher than average percentage of the cost coming from the farebox —- 56.3 per cent. “This centre,’’ she continued, “has all the modern facilities re- quired to help employees do their usual first-class jobs more effi- ciently and with greater safety. And there’s room on the 3.25-acre site for future expansion."’ Equipment includes an automatic 90-second bus wash, an up-to-date fuel istand where diesel oil, anti-freeze and transmission oil are easily and safely dispensed, two hoists, and a maintenance pit with features that include electrical and air outlets and special lighting. Before helping to cut the ribbon, Humphreys spoke of the history of the municipally-operated system and of the special relationship the Blue Bus drivers have with the community. ‘it's little wonder,” he said, ‘that Blue Bus drivers have a reputation for courtesy and service that is unequalled in the bus transit world.”’ The system, still operated by West Vancouver, is now funded and planned by BC Transit as an integral part of the Vancouver Regional Transit System.
