duces a lot of humiliating pi-
ty or sympathy, or makes it
seem like an unspoken desire
for the questioner to invite
them to their celebration. No
one wants to be invited just
because it has been learned
they have no plans.

thought direct personal ques-
uons rude and crude

Many times, the person

day of peace and quiet - but
without) someone feeling
sorry for them

Although Miss Manners
agrees with you about per-
sonal questions being
generally rude, she has a hard
time calling a careless holiday
inquiry, probably intended as
nothing more than a way of
starting an idle conversation,
as crude. You should hear
what some people ask perfect
strangers nowadays.

You need never answer any
personal question, however.
‘*Nothing”’ is an answer that
reveals your holiday plans,
and is, as you suggest, likely
to produce an unwelcome
follow-up

But ‘‘Oh, 1 like to spend

snow?'’ are all polite
Statements that reveal
nothing about your plans or
lack of them.

DEAR MISS MANNERS

— It seems that few people
know the meaning behind
giving roses. Will you explain
the meanings behind the dif-
ferent colors of roses (white,
red, yellow, etc.), and the dif-
ference in giving a_ single
rose, aS Opposed to a dozen.

GENTLE READER — A
single rose is cheaper than a
dozen, although not always
12 times as cheap. However,
that is an extremely rude
thing for the recipient of
roses tO AOLICe.

There are as many versions
of the symbolism of flowers
as there are of which wedding
anniversary iS associated with
sapphires or with software.

‘*Language of Flowers’” has,
tor example, a list of ‘‘mean-
ings’’ for roses of different
colors and stages of develop-
ment, ranging from ‘‘Tran-
quilize my anxielty’’ to
‘Beauty 8 your only
altracuon.”’

A withered white rose, it
states, means ‘*‘Transient 1m-
pressions,’’ while an un-
withered one means ‘‘l am
worthy of you’’ and a white
rosebud means ‘‘Grrtheod.”’
But if a yellow rose means, as
is claimed, ‘‘Decrease of
love; jealousy,’’ who would
send any? In neither of these
states of a romance does one
generally think of sending
roses.

You may count only on
most people’s understanding
that red roses have to do with
romantic love, and
everyone’s understanding
that sending any roses at all
has to do with ‘‘Thinking of
you”’ if not also ‘‘Hang the
expense.’’
