Also, we set charismatic leaders -
apart, idealizing some as saints or
condemning others as devils. ;

Misied by this philosophy of
dualism, we are unprepared for.
the ambiguities and ambivalence
of life. :

Overnight, leaders who have
been raised to the heights are cast
to the depths.

Consider the wisdom of
Judeo-Christian Biblical
monotheism. That scripture knows
the mischief that follows from ei- .
ther, idealizing or demonizing
God’s creatures.

Esau was not all treachery, nor
was Jacob all virtue. .

Moses did not use the rod only
to split the sea and save the peo-
ple; he used. it also in pride and
‘anger to strike out at the rock and
force water from the stone.

David was not only Goliath’s
slayer and the faithful psalmist, he.
was: also. the adulterer. of
Bathsheba and the murderer of
‘Uriah.

That’ scripture warns us. “that.
there is no righteous person who -
_does only “‘good.”’

Its tales of “flawed” patriarchs,
princes, priests and -prophets il-
lustrate. the. tragic’ folly of
idolatry.

_ But we mortals need heroes; “we
seek out | figures of. exemplary
strength and wisdom. |

Yet the creatures of God are
