a UNIQUE TRAINING FACILITY FOR LOWER MAINLAND for Waiters and Wilson Bll - Sanday, December 4, 1983 - North Shore News Dome, sweet dome TONY WAITERS and Les Wilson made a pretty good team when they were involved with the Van- couver Whitecaps and they have made a con- siderable contribution to the Canadian national team program. And now the duo are linking together to bring a domed training facility to the lower mainland. The idea is nothing new in other parts of the world, but the two principal investors, working under the name of World Soccer, have come up with something pretty onginal for Canada. Indoor-outdoor training facilities are presently being used in Detroit, Baltimore, Minnesota, Seattle and Tam- pa in the U.S. and in Wolver- hampton, Manchester and Ipswich in England. And now the dome is com- ing to the Norwegian Seaman’s Centre in Burnaby according to Waiters. The indoor facility has nothing to do with Waiters’ other job as National team soccer coach but the per- sonable soccer personality sees the facility as similar to the various national facilities in other parts of the world. With work scheduled to begin in the spring, and com- pletion scheduled for June of 1984, Waiters sees the train- ing facility as being ideal for clinics, national team train- ing programs for various lengths of time. In the long run, the plan is for more than just a covered training field. The first stages will deliver the indoor facility which will include three training fields which could possibly open up to a full sized outdoor sized field plus a full sized all- weather field out of doors. ae Bt Soe "eae -! ee Fore 7 a ’ ly BUSY: fa 25 ria, ‘~ ‘ us not an cae . Planned for five phases, the facility will eventually be a complete recreation centre involving club house, audio- visual rooms, lecture spaces, offices, three full sized soccer fields and a jogging/fitness centre. If all goes according to plan, the total complex will be ready by 1988 with the in- itial small fields under the’ dome ready by next fall. The two partners feel that the long needed facility will help to nail down the lower mainland as the top soccer centre in North America.
