B2 - Sunday, April 3, 1983 - North Shore News Vancouver will be host city for the first tme when the very best in Canadian thoroughbred racing is honored on the evening of Saturday, April 9, at Hotel Vancouver. The eighth annual Sovereign Awards Dinner, to be hosted by the B.C. Jockey Club, will honor horses and people from all over Canada in 19 different categories. First among the 19 are Horse of the Year and Man of the Year. Horse of the Year for 1982 is Ontario-bred Frost King. Last year he moved into the number two position, behind the great mare Glorious Song, as the alltime Canadian-bred money winner. Man of the Year will be announced in the next few days. , The Sovereign Awards were started in 1976 to honor the outstanding horses and racing personalities of 1975. First Man of the Year was E.P. Taylor, for years the leading figure in Canadian racing and breeding. Jack Diamond, co-president of the B.C. Jockey Club, was the second Man of the Year winner. Western Canada, and B.C., have always been well represented in the lineup of award winners. Ironicaly, though, with the awards dinner and _ presentations coming to Canada’s west coast for the first time, only one B.C. person will step up to accept an award. He becomes the first ever two-time winner of the writing award for his column last October on a California woman, Bea Lydecker, who claims she talks to horses. McDonald was also the winner in 1980. Top B.C. winner last year was Lois Bennett of Kelowna, whose Native Flower was named Canadian Broodmare of the Year. Native Flower is the dam of this year’s Horse of the Year, Frost King.
