A7- Wednesday, February 24, 1982 - North Shore News SE coil ox Why not dual measurement system? Dear Editor: How little these “metric addicts”have understood the whole metric conversion problem. I thoroughly applaud the North Shore News (and any other media) who give every assistance to readers to cope with the roughshod methods of parliament and the metric commission. All that A.B. Evers, the Commission and others can think of is that the metric system of multiples of ten are “simpler and more rational”. Are they really incapable of realising that the mass of population who have been educated and hved any portion of their adult lives with the imperial system and to whom it has become second nature, simply cannot have any visual or mental image of metric substitutes, so that news items containing only metric figures, sports results, Statistics, weather and in- structions etc. are com- pletely lost to them? “Think Metric” and all such propaganda are just empty phrases since metric figures have to be mentally translated in order to get a conception of the amounts being stated. When an imperial equivalent is not given at the same time there is no way information can be absorbed in a meaningful way. We are legislated to be bilingual on everything to accommodate the minority so why are we not given imperial with metric to suit Give us longer exit signal Dear Editor’? I would like to submit a letter, or could one call it a “gripe” on the Predicament as pointed out to our do- good and bleeding heart council in North Van City hall. I refer, Sir, to the Predicament of “an accident waiting to happen” at the location of Riverside Drive and Dollarton Highway. The one and only exit from the largest industrial site on the North Shore, including, of course, Hooker Chemical which, as so many of our good friends (City Hall) have informed us, is a blight on the landscape. We, the workers of the above estate, can and will live with the -Hooker situation (do we have any option?) but wish to implore Taxpayers Dear Editor: How selfish can you get all you taxpayers complaining about paying school taxes for other B.C. not so wealthy districts. Who do the hell do you think educated you? the powers that be to see things a little our way. I refer to the traffic light situation at the above-mentioned intersection in the late af- ternoon, 3:15 p.m. till 4:30 p-m., when the lights favor east to west 1 min. 30 secs. against exit time from Riverside Drive 25 to 30 secs. A lonely little exit for approximately 930 cars (workers), large cement trucks (approximately three per hour (both ways), logging trucks entering fully loaded (approximately two per hour), container storage traffic (approximately 15 per day). Not to mention the usual industrial traffic. We have already had logs fall from the trucks, cement splattered over the road and many other frights, not to selfish A basic education is not a bargaining point but a right of every child not a selected few. Alternate routes or exits? Yes, a private road belonging, we understand to Hooker Chemical, who have seen fit to place a gate across it at Spicer Road (east). It is high time our do-good (or nothing?) council got off their overstressed rumps and got down to brass tacks on this situation and considered their constituents’ point of view, instead of putting it on the agenda for “future study”. Surprisingly enough, we consider this council a NATO assembly: “No Action, Talk Only” = ad- ministration. It will take at least a generation of people growing up and educated in the system to be able to completely switch over and imperial equivalents should NOT be dropped at an ar- bitrary date. Perhaps in time having the two figures quoted side by side, metric would slowly be absorbed, but it is certainly not fair to the public to do it in this totally unnecessary fashion. Also it has been forced on the country without normal parliamentary procedure and is costing an enormous amount of money, adding inflation and stress to the already stressful situation in which many of us are living and for what advantage? Europe has operated suc- cessfully with the dual systems for a long time. Average Joe (Name supplied) North Vancouver Education ‘needs’ never bore her Dear Editor-: I find it very interesting to note the diversification of the “needs” within School District 44. Several months ago one of our principals-was pleading on behalf of his students who were ap- parently “passing out in the halls” due to welfare cut- backs. Now we see another school in the District ap- ment proaching the federal and provincial governments m order to get a grant (for students) to spend a month in France. One could never be bored with the demands presented to our provincial govern- regarding our educational “needs” . (Mrs.) L.P.
