World food stocks are so

dangerously low that the
United Nations Food and
Agriculture Organization
has called a “glopatalert.”

The Rome-based inter-
national body recently
released a report on the state
of food and agriculture that
gave one of the gloomiest
ever assessments of a hungry
future. Global stocks are
“down for the second suc-
cessive year to well below
the level estimated to be the
minimum required for world
food security,” says the
report.

Food production is grow-
ing at only 0.2 per cent per
year, and cannot keep pace
with population growth,
currently 1.8 per cent.

Africa is hardest-hit. More
than a score of Sahelian
countries are suffering
drought, made worse in
some cases by large numbera
of refugees and ‘displaced
people flecing war or
famine.

Most of the decline is in
coarse grains (maize, sor-
ghum, millet), important
foodstuffs in developing
countrics. World wheat pro-
duction will rise, thanks to
bumper crops in the USA
and Western Europe.
