B4-Wednesday, November 19, 1980 - North Shore News sport Blues-Cougars neck and neck The Capilano College Blues Rugby team played the B.C.1.T. Cougars Sunday in a winner-take-all showdown for the Totem Conference Rugby Championship. Both teams were undefeated going into the contest, having handily demolished everyone else in the college circuit, but were stalemated 7-7 m their only previous encounter with each other. When the dust finally settled at Klahanie Park Sunday, the Blues and the Cougars were again deadlocked 7-7 forcing an additional sudden death match to be scheduled on a neutral field on Sunday. November 23. Blues had a chance to put the Cougars away early in the first half, but failed to cash in on five consecutive penalty kicks. Capilano College held a 4-3 half ume lead on a tury by Doug Speranza. B.C.1.T. pulled ahead 7-4 early in the second frame but Blues’ Roy Kristianson kicked a penalty goal to tie the game and round out the scoring. In soccer acuion, B.C.I.T. Cougars swept a double header from Capilano College defeating the Blues by an identical 2-1 count in both contests. The Blues must now win their last two games against Royal Roads and hope that B.C.1.T. takes two games off Vancouver Community College, if they are to keep their playoff hopes alive. In basketball meanwhile, both men’s and women’s Blues teams closed out their exhibition seasons on a winning note with = the women beating Columbia Institute 74-42 while the men beat Columbia 90-59. On Fnday night, the women's team defeated UBC. in a ught 55-50 contest while the men blew a 20 point lead in going down 87-62 to the Thunderbirds. Theresa Smith was the Blues leading scorer both mights with 24 and 18 points respecuvely, as was Phil de Vooght for the men with 28 and 22 points.
