A18-Wednesday, August 20, 1980 - North Shore News Learnin . e Words of wisdom One of the first con- siderations any teacher of literature, at any level from grade school through college, is bound to have is the question of how to make the works being read “come alive.” Many students may not be terribly interested in reading, and would be just as © happy to skim a plot outline before exams. One solution that has worked is to require students to read books they can immediately identify with — 20th century works which deal with aspects of life familiar and important to the readers. Thus, in inner. city schools, such works as Manchild in the Promised Land and Call it Sleep have become popular. What, however, if the teacher wishes or is required to assign tne “classics”? How stimulate interest, then? Field trips, when possible, are excellent as a way of getting the student to par- ticipate. For instance, if the local museum iS sponsoring an exhibition that would tie in with a novel or poem being read, or if the local theatre is putting on a production of a drama that is required reading, nothing could be better. But, the question | still remains of how to make real a place or situation that is “long ago and far away.” ’ One way might be to make the localities come to life through photos. For in- stance, a reader of Emily Bronte’s masterpiece, Wuthering Heights, is bound to react more strongly to it if he or she can visualize the dramatic, desolate, yet magnificent, windswept moors that are almost as much a character im the novel as Heathcliff himself. One might also turn to page 261 of A_ Literacy Gazetteer of England (McGraw-Hill) by Lois H. Fisher, and read the ex- tensive and informative section on Haworth, the town where the Brontes grew up. The Gazetteer will, if not satisfy the desire for photos, atleast stimulate it.
