Dear Editor: Your editonal of May 28, 1980 defends the stated 10.9% average imcrease in West Vancouver property taxes and attempts to jusufy it by means of the Mayor's newspaper article. The budget was submitted to all West Vancouver taxpayers and thew feedback clearly indicated they did not wish services to be reduced, even though the cost was going up. You may be interested to learn the results of my survey. 1. There are so many people with tax increased from 16.9% to 29% that I find it hard to believe the average increase ts 10.9% as the Mayor tells us. 2. Many small businesses have an increase of 32% to 50% and are unhappy. 3} There were 14,500 néwsletters distributed and only 55Q answers were returned to the Mayor. Many citizens did not receive the newsletter (1 for one) or if they did, they thought it was junk mail and tossed it out. The questionnaire did not ask for an acquisition opinion on waterfront property which should be put to the people. For most West Vancouver homeowners taxes have increased out of the proportion compared to other areas in Greater Vancouver where increases seem to be under 100 dollars. The general con- sensus of opinion is_ that expenditures in West Vancouver are far too high and unnecessary. They must be curtailed or we are m danger of losing our homes. It is time to stop passing the buck. Our local ad- mimstrators must accept a good portion of respon- sibility for these tax im creases and be aware that a good majority of West animal victims need help human population = of Washington. Yet, there 1s sull the non-human ciement which needs human support. For this very reason, the Vancouver Regional Branch of the B.C.S.P.C_.A_ has miliated a rehef fund for the Washington animals in necd The wildlife which ts unsuccessfully secking refuge. the abandoned domestic anmmal! without the necessary requirements for survival and the herds of farm anumnais which have been left to ther own devices are just a few of the many associated problems. The Washington Animals in Need fund (W.A_I.N_) will allow the humanitanans working through the auspices of the Washington State Federauon of Humanc Societies to rescue = and relocate wildlife, airlift surviving farm animals to bigh ground and provide shelter to the domestc animals.
