‘ A plan for a spacious and
rambling ranch-style home is
featured this week.

The exterior illustrated is
finished in a combination of
fieldstone and siding, with
wood trim accenting the
three large front windows.
The roof is finished in cedar
shake, a covering  par-
ticularily appropriate with
the gable treatment. Asphalt
shingles, or even concrete
roof tile could be substituted
if desired. Structurally,
concrete roof tile can be
added to most roof designs
without extra supporting
members. More details such
as load factors are available

The entry door styled to
match the double garage
entry is flanked by glass and
set in a panel of, fieldstone
facing. The inside entry
area, complete with guest
coat closet, gives an im-
mediate view of the wood-
burning fireplace and the
sunken living area.

The dining room is up a
step from the living room
and will allow for intimate
meals, A sliding pocket door
leads to the kitchen. The

The kitchen and breakfast
area is a little different in
design. There is more than
the usual counter space, plus
a middle island. The double
sink is shown here, but could
just as easily be installed on

greenhouse next to the
whole area for spaciousness
and light, ideal for plants.

There is a half wall be-
tween the breakfast area and
the family room, accenting
open . space. This family
room has sliding glass doors
to the yard, and another
fireplace. With this design,
the fireplace mass is all
inside the house, which is
energy efficient. The
warmed mass of brick and
masonry will radiate heat
into the house while a fire is
lit, and long after it cools off.
Many design extras, or
accessories are now
available to make the most
of fireplace heat.

away from the rest of the
