§ Grease: book, music and lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren y; a Theatre Under the Stars production in repertory with South Pacific at Stanley Park’s Malkin Bowl to Aug. 19 at 8 p.m. Faartin Millerchip Curtain Call THEATRE Under the Stars (TUTS) have the best damned stage seiting in Vancouver — when the weather is fine. Sure, Malkin Bowl is a pain to design for and the cramped quarters make getting large casts and set pieces on and off in a hurry awkward to say the least, but the majority of any audi- ence won't notice. It’s a family outing sort of tip wo the theatre, with 2 pleasant walk in the roses before, lots of crinkle-wrapped candies during and hot checo- late and popcorn at intermis- sion. If you forgot your mos- quito spray, the volunteer ush- ers will likely have some for sale. There’s even room at the side for youngsters to play on the grass without too much fear of upstaging the hard- working casts — no fear of that when noisy peacocks, overhead float planes and squirrels in the lighting gantry do a much better job of it. Wednesday fast, the sun shone warmly arid the house was almost full as Grease was once again the word fer TUTS. The show reopened the Malkin Bowl in 1984 after the fire of 1982 and, if you had read the program or were a TUTS regular, this year's production tipped a hat in that direction as Ruth Nichol ad-libbed her way admirably to the stage after an appro- priate entrance in a genuine pink Cadillac Fleetwood. Grease is nota great musical, but it is wonderful entertainment if you can recall the °50s era of swing and doo-wop. Even if you can't, the movie version’s SUCCESS | has spawned not onc, but two generations of interest in Rock °n This year’s cast do an admirable job under the direction of Simon Isherwood, the musical direction of David Fryer and the choreography of Peggy Quinn. th Nichol relishes every scene she has as the formidable English teacher Miss Lynch while Mitchell Mackay has just as much fin with the silver-clad hairdressing Teen Angel. The leads of Danny Zuko, the King of Cool at Rydell High, and his virgin girlfriend Sandy Dumbrowski are played by Brad Lindbjerg Streiau and Lalainia Lindbjerg Strelau. Ms. Strelau's voice and looks fit Sandy perfectly, while Brad could flash just a little more testosterone before succumbing to her charms. Perhaps it’s just a matter of proj pjection across an open space without walls. If so, no member of the cast has to look further than Vincent Tong’s Doody, a member of Danny’s gang, the T- birds. Tong takes his number (each member of the T-birds and their female counterparts, the Pink Ladies, get a song) and turns “Those Magic Changes” into a show stopper. It’s not just his voice, good as it his, or his athleticism (uader- exploited?) but the way he can sell a song. It was also the first song that let the audience see what power this cast can pack as, mostly, we could hear both words and music at the same time. lon’t want to say the sound was awful, but — together with the ‘odd slow scene and some awkward scene transitions — it cer- * tainly robbed the show’s opening night of any chance of achiev- . ing consistent excitement. If the voices balanced, we couldn’t hear the band. If we finally got to hear thar sax wail, one or more photo Tim Mathieson NORTH Shore residents appearing in the highly- entertaining TUTS production of Grease are (clock- wise from left): Carolyn Bergstrand, Jason McKinnon, Barbara Kottmeler, Rnold Smith, Matt Oliver and Chelsea Read. voices were lost. There is never enough technical rehearsal time in repertory sit- uations so, by the time you read this the problems should have been rectified with repention. I hope so, because this production has the potential to kick some serious ass. IMAx, Iv’S A SLAM DUNK DOUBLE FEATURE!
