The consensus behind a recent survey for Trimark Investment Management shows thar retired Canadians are less stressed, more physi- cally active, and happier in their relationships than when they were working. The survey revealed chat 59% of individuals who con- sider themselves to be retired or partially retired, found the transition from full dime work to retirement “not at all diffi- cul; 23% reported fading the transition somewhat or very difticulz. When asked what was the most difficult part of reaching retirement, 18% — biamed financial constraints and money problems and 10% cited boredom and having foo much time on their hands. OF those working, 31% say they work for the social inter- action, Asother 29% of retirees work because they “need” the extra money on top oof their retirement income to “maintain” their pre-retirement litestvle; 17% work simply because they “want” the extra money on top oof their retirement incame to enjoy a_ better lifestyle than before they reuired; and 15% work for the intellectual enrichment. “Retirement is really a mis- nomer — your life can be as active as you want it to be,” said Rhonda Katz, a Toronto- based family therapist. “This will hold especially true for the baby boomers when they reach retirement since, as the largest segment of the popula- tion, it is likely that a variety of companies will seck to accommodate their needs even more. Giving some seri- ous thought as to how you want to spend the first ten years of retirement is an important way to avoid any potential disappointment — Not just financially but also emotionally.” Life for today’s retiree in Canada couldn’t be much better. M 43% of retirees said their inteHectual stimulation level increased. 45% of retirees said their physical activity increased, while 29% said it decreased. @ 57% of retirees said family contlict stayed che same, but 31% said it decreased. @ 46% of retirces said their self esteem stayed intact but 37% said it increased. G 72 % of retirees feel that retirees are well respected within the community while 19% reported being ‘treated like they are “past their prime. B 54% of retirees said that being retired and spending more time with their spouses has had a positive effect on their relationships. Only 3% reported a negative effect. It is worth noting that women are more likely to report that retirement has had a positive impact on their relationshin with their spouse at 59%, compared to 49% of men who think so.
