10 - North Shore News - Sunday, February 13, 2000 ——— MAIL Box An ode to a brother: gone but not forgotten Dear Editor: On Feb. 14, 1977, in Tehran, Iran, my brother Mohammad Mirhadi was born. He lived in Iran until he was two vears old. Mohammad and both of my parents moved to Vancouver in May of 1980. Mohanunad went to Ridgeway ciementary school in) North Vancouver where he received numerous awards for his great academic skills. When Mo was six years old he started a form of martial arts called Tae Kwon Do and committed himself to that until he was 14. Mo started working at the age of 13 at Red Robin so he could be an indepen- dent person and look after himself and his fami- N That was always Mo's goal, to take care of his family from the start. He attended high school, worked and did his martial arts. After high school was over he became a full time kickboxing instructor (Sensei) at Champions Martial Arts Academy. Mo became very involved in his martial arcs and competed in many tournaments where he became the B.C. Champion, North American Champ and also Canadian Champion. Mo changed many people’s lives through his kind and humble ways. - T recall numerous letters we have received over the last three years about how Mo changed so many people’s lives. One in particular was an older man named Andrew Mulkani. In his own words he states “When I first came to Champions I was a man in my 50s who drank too much, smoked too much and had fow self- esteem. You were my first instructor and through your guidance, patience and kind ways I was transformed into a non-smoker and non-drinker and my attitude in my work place changed so much my supervisor noticed it and this resulted in me getting 2 better job.” I feel as though this should tell you a lithe about my brother. On the fatal night of Feb, 28, 1997, while at a movie with his girliriend my brother was shot by a coward who is now known as Michael Caster. ‘Those bullets not only killed my brother but a piece of every single person who knew Mo died that night too. Why? Because Mo had a good life, good look and a bigger body which intimidated the skinny Caster. Mo had goals, he had a three-month-old baby at the ume and most important he had a great future in front of him. In life and in death he was an inspiration to us all. He was my HERO! Michael Caster not only took my brother from us, his family, but trom the world, depriv- ing it of a person as wonderful and great as Mohammad Mirhadi. As we reach Feb. 14, which would have been his 23rd birthday, { saluue Mohammad Mirhadi for helping me incredibly in my life and the lives of others. May Yor it. A brilliant star shines unto us Casting a comforting light. A conifort well known as Mo’s. His presence, his speech, And now his memory, Grace us with brilliance As does the star in the shining light And how can: we say it isn’t Mo, Blazing upon us from the heaven, Guiding us by the light of the star. Marine Drive fence ineffective Dear Editor: Re: West Vancouver's Marine Drive anti- jay-walking fence. The Jan. 30 News quite cleverly slides the word “the- oretically” into the descrip- tion of what the fence is sup- posed to do. Theoretically is right! Nat only is the fence ugly I venture to say that it is use- less and possibly more dap- gerous than having nothing at all. Any self-respecting teenager could jump the fence with ease if they had to; as it turns out, they don’t have to: there are huge gaps spaced regularly at each tree along the length of the fence. The reason it may. be more dangerous than before is that the jaywalkers will now head for one of the gaps with the risk of more than one going for the same space at the same time, trying to beat the cars.
