Fulton wrestles with revenge By Andrew McCredie Sports Editor RYAN Fulton knows the pain of apparent victory turning to defeat in the blink of Nan cye. Last year at the B.C. nigh school championships, the Carson Graham wrestler had a comfortable lead on Maple Ridge’s Joe Hadziev in their semi-final 74-kg weight class match. Then, ina blink of the proverbial cyc, Hadziev made a move and won the match. Fulton went into the consola- tion final, won it and finished # third in the province. “He’s a very good wrestler, and he caught me in a move and stuck me for the in,” Fulton said of Hadziev ‘Tuesday prior to an after- school practice. Asked if he'd like to wres- B tle Hadziev again, the affable Grade 12 athlete smiles: “I g Would like to, I'd like to prove it to myself.” Fulton may get his chance this weekend ai the Capilano Invite at Sutherland Secondary. Over 400 wrestlers from approximately @ 30 schools will take part. Fulton has been wrestling for five years, a product of the Balmoral junior secondary m wrestling /rugby pipeline that stocks Carson Graham. Carson’s boys’ wrestling team has won the provincial ream tile three of the past five years, and the Carson rugby team will be defending their provincia! title this spring. “This is the big year,” Fulton said of his final year in high school, “Hopefully TH be able to take that first place in B.C. as my uitimate accom- pusiment in high school.” Fulton’s plans after gradu- ation aren’t confirmed vet, but both Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia wrestling cuaches are keeping their fin- gers crossed Balmoral coach Tan McDonald, instrumenta! in both the wrestling and rugby programs at the North Vancouver school, has bigh praise for Fulton: “He’s one of the best athletes Pve ever coached.” As a rugby player, Fulton has been the captain of the Balmoral team and this past year captained the Capilano under- 19 squad to the provin- cial final. “He has a wil! to win, the focus and he trains very hard,” McDonald said when describing Fulton. “He comes from an extensive athietic background; he was anc of the top 100 metre freestyle swimmers in the province before he decided to concen- trate on wrestling and rugby.” if Fulton doesn’t get to wrestle Hadziev this weekend, their paths will most likely meet on a mat at the B.C. Championships next month.
