NOW that the fall season is
here there are many jobs that
should be done before the
cold weather sets in.

Spring blooming bulbs are plant-
ed in the fall and now is a great t
to plan and plant for a colorful
spring show. In the past, large bulbs
such as tulips and daffodils were
used extensively to create a mass of
color in annual beds. They do make
a nice show but they also require
frequent and expensive replacement
or considerable labor to lift, dry a
replant every few years.

To save time and moncy look at
smaller bulbs that are easily natural-
ized and require a minimum of care.
Six to 10 bulbs in a clump in several
locations where they will not have to
be disturbed will create a good dis-
play in a few years as they multiply.

the base of rocks or the edge of

An edible bulb that you might
like to try is garlic. This is the time
to plant a row or block of cloves.
Choose a site that has full sun, is
well drained, has good soil and will
not be needed for spring planting.
Set each clove about 5 cm (2 in.)
deep and 15 cm (6 in.) apart and
then cover with a loose mulch. The
leaves will emerge in the early spring
and the cloves will be ready to har-
vest in late July or carly August.

green up again and start to grow
