Against Violence month on the
woe North Shore, but the beginning of
’ what coufd be a combined community ef-
'; fort to rid our streets and homes of the vi-
olence and crime that is eroding our local
_ quality of life.
~ oThe moath of meetings, forums, and

educational venues, which was supported -

by ‘various North Shore agencies, was an
impressive start to what organizers hope
will become an annual event.

Armed with the basic belief that every
_ individual on the North Shore has the right
to live, work and play in a community free
of viofence, the initiative brought together
hundreds of local residents at dozens of
meetings to raise. the community’s
awareness of violence. And wha can be
done to prevent violence.

Beyond the important information pres-
ented to the public by the many experts
who volunteered their time, the Together

Against Violence month proved thai many ;
different public and private social service’

organizations can work together for the
common good. i
Since no efficient network of. com-
munication currently exists between these
agencies —- and sometimes even within a
single large organization — the month-long
initiative allowed many of these agencies to
meet and find out what each does. This
alone wili prove helpful in (the future for
individuals and families seeking assistance
in our community. “
The Together Against Violence month
proved that we are a community willing to
take on the beast of violence in our:own
neighborhoods. :

an effort to ensure a fair trial for
Teale’s estranged husband Paul
has blown up in His Honor’s face,
as was inevitable.

U.S. and other foreign media
have rightly ignored the ban.
That's left the Ontario govern-
ment us¢lessly endeavoring to in-
tercept such offending material at
the border.

Uselessly, because nothing can
be done about satellite TV and
private videotaping, nor about fax
and computer transmission by
those with access to details of the
trial. .

Asa result, thousands of Cana-
dians already know those details
and their numbers grow daily.
Among the remainder, curiosity
and rumors remain so strong that
even Pau! Teale’s lawyers
reportedly feel they may now be’

fixed terms, with elections every
four years — thereby ending the
disruptive tradition that calls for a
government to resign if defeated
on a specific measure.

Instead, a defeat in the House
would merely require the govern-
ment to go back to the drawing

That would free MLAs/MPs to
listen to their constituents rather

also force government to listen to
