North Vancouver District Council agreed unanimously on March 18 to support Surrey coun- cil in its efforts to get Minister of Municipal Affairs, Recreation and Culture Lyall Hanson to amend the Municipal Act and grant simi- lar powers to other municipalities. The proposed amendment would require that, as a condition of a development permit, the de- veloper would submit a_ plan showing all trees larger than eight NORTH VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL inches in diameter (at a point three feet above the ground) that may be affected by the develop- ment and a plan “satisfactory to the Director of Planning’’ show- ing replacement trees. Use or occupancy of lands or buiidings could be prohibited where replacement trees are not provided in accordance with such a plan. Hanson has told Surrey mayor Robert Bose that he will be look- ing at Vancouver’s experience with their charter amendment ‘‘before actively pursuing this matter for other municipalities.” In a letter to Bose dated Oct. 31 last year, Hanson acknowledged the importance of this amend- ment, but admitted, ‘*We do not currently have this matter on our list of legislative priorities for the 199! session.”” Ald. Janice Harris, in moving the motion of support for Surrey's request, said she was ‘‘incredibly impressed’? with the information from Surrey council and hoped that ‘‘we will look at this report with a view to incorporating it with our Environmental Protec- tion Bylaw which we have under way.” Ald. Paul Turner later filed a notice of motion that would direct staff to prepare backgrcund reports for a street tree program bylaw for the district. ai oO IF WE SELLIT...W It’s not just a °43” tire.
