The athletic director for the Spartans since 1988, Young has been teaching and coaching in West Vancouver schools for 1} years. His expertise includes basketball, volleyball, rugby, football and track and field. He is the second president from Sentinel, following Peter Lefaivre, current Sentinel principal, who led the NSSSAA in 1981-81. Nine sports, some with as many as four age divisions, encompass- ing approximately 125 teams from 14 North Vancouver, West Van- couver, and Squamish secondary schools, are under way: boys’ football, rugby, soccer and volleyball; girls’ field hockey and volleyball; and boys’ and girls’ badminton, cross-country and swimming. Football, played by most North Shore schools in the 1960s but which gradually dwindled to two junior and three senior teams, has enjoyed a recent resurgence and this season five schools have entered senior teams, four of them also with junior programs. Girls’ volleyball, the most pop- ular fall sport in terms of numbers of teams and total participation, has more than 40 teams in senior, junior, juvenile and bantam age divisions. . Cross-country, which has held a four-meet season in the spring since the early 1960s, will try a fall schedule this year. The B.C. championships are held in November.
