What they should have seen is the basic purity and innocence of that lifestyle. “Hf you look at them (African masks) when the light strikes them,” she continues, “You can see blue or orange flashes. That's the way I see things in the full spectrum of light.’ Marshall's earliest vision of light came on the Yorkshire coast where she was born in 1921 to English-Irish parents. She im- migrated to Canada with her fami- ly in 1924, landing at Northwest Bay (now Sargeant’s Bay) near Sechelt. Her interest in art began at age four, when she learned to paint to pass the time while living in a three-room shack in the woods. At West Vancouver High School her art teacher brought in his own paints for her to experiment with and that began a fife-long love af- fair with oil painting. Today Marshall lives in Phoenix, Arizona, but she says she ‘‘never spiritually left.B.C.”’ As proof of her emotional tie to the province, she donated just under 100 acres of Qualicum Beach property to the Canadian government. The area is the Mar- shall Stevenson Wildlife Sanctuary, named after both her and her husband's fathers. North Shore Presentation House Gallery: Ausora Australis.
