School counsellor
helps students
boost self-esteem

I LIKE myself,
own problems.

These three beliefs, according to
North Vancouver elementary
school counsellor George
Saunders, are vital to a child if he
or she is going to experience an
optimal feeling of self-esteem.

Saunders, the area counsellor
for Ross Road, Carisbrooke and
Boundary schools, is a specialist in
family and parenting counselling
who will be speaking on the sub-
ject of self-esteem in children at an
upcoming conference sponsored by
the Adlerian Psychology Associa-
tion of B.C.

Underlining the importance of
good, supportive counselling in the
schoo! system, Saunders laments
the time restrictions he faces in
covering his three schovis. **Here,
(when they are at this age), we're
actually forming their attitudes,’
he says. ‘‘The resources required
are immense.”’

Although some people point toa
change in traditional family pat-
ferns as a cause for childhood
maladjustment, Saunders says that
factors such as having both parents
working outside the horne aren't
causing the problem. ‘‘What

Body language, such as downcast
eyes, may also offer a clue as to a
child’s low self-image.

By working with the teacher,
Parents, in group situations and
with the child individually,
Saunders helps build up a child's
self-esteem and his or her ability to
recognize that if, for instance, they
are laughed at, the problem lies
not with them, but with their
tormentor.

As people become increasingly
aware that children with low self-
esteem will carry this poor image
of themselves into their adult life,
with self-destructive consequences,
