SCIENCE FAIR WINNERS Girls receive recognition for disposable diaper experiment THEY DIDN'T quite get back the money they spent on three kinds of disposable diapers and assorted other sup- plies, but Crofton House student Maya Lang, of West Vancouver, and her partner Kathleen Fairey of Vancouver, were happy to take home a $25 gift certificate and a gold ribbon for their entry this April in the Vancouver/Lower Mainland Science Fair. Their project, entitled Diapers, was entered in the intermediate physical sciences category. It involved two experiments, the first to compare the absorbency of three leading brands, LUV’s, Huggies and Ultra Pampers, and the second to invent their own ab- sorbent — yet biodegradable — diaper. To test the relative absorbency of diapers the girls poured 61 ml of colored water on the inside of the diapers and then sprinkled them _ with a teaspoon of baby powder. They turned over the diapers By MAUREEN CURTIS and the amount of powder that came off was their measure of the absorbency. Repeating the experiment six times, they came up with consis- tent results showing that LUV'’s is the most absorbent, followed by Huggies and Ultra Pampers. ’ The diaper that the girls came up with consisted .of a layer of biodegradable plastic, three sanitary napkins, cotton batting, two sheets of gauze, a chemical substance that turns water to gel and a sheet of cloth on top. “The absorbency was not that great, but I think we showed that the diaper companies with their resources and technology, should easily be able to make a good biodegradable diape;,’’ said Lang. Having missed the entry date, three Collingwood School students participated in the fair as exhib- itors, but were not eligible for prizes. - 4 One of them, Grade 5 student Jaime Tiampo, did a project con- cerning magnetic suspension in cars, which received favorable comments. The fair took place at Sutherland Secondary this year, and was a prelude to the Canada une Science Fair held in May at Locals graduate from U. of Vic NORTH SHORE. students were among those who participated in spring convocation ceremonies at the University of Victoria on June 1, 2 and 3 when degrees, diplomas and certificates were conferred upon more than 1,400 graduate and undergraduate students.
