Seymour links with Japanese Sister city Toke AFTER A year of preparations, Japanese and North Vancouver officials signed a sister-suburb agreement making North Van- couver’s Seymour area and Toke, Japan, sister communities. TES RAVE Contributing Writer Japanese officials toured the area during their recent visit and papers were signed July 3] in North Vancouver District hall with Mayor Marilyn Baker in atten- dance. Seymour-Toke Society president Phil Sunderland said Japanese cit- izens with support of the Tokyu Land Corporation had picked Seymour as a sister community because of the similarities between Toke and Seymour. “Both are small communities and rapidly growing,” he said. Toke is located in the prefecture of Chiba, which is North Van- couver's sister city. It is within commuting distance of Tokyo and has a planned growth of 30,000 residents over the next 20 vears, Sunderland said the Seymour- Toke Society wants to close the cultural gaps created by differences in customs and to promote com- munication and better understan- ding. “We would like to foster ex- change through personal travel or correspondence,”’ he said. A few society members, Sunderland said, may travel to Japan in the coming year and a small student exchange may be in place next summer. To promote understanding of other countries and peoples, he said it was especially important that youngsters travel and live in other cultures. “The Japanese,’’ Sunderland said, ‘tare eager to expose their youngsters tu life outside Japan because they live in a mono- cultural society.” Sunderland said he hopes the establishment of exchange will build friendship, understanding and co-operation: ‘Both groups feel understanding is beneficial to future work and avoidance of misunderstanding.” IMPAIRED DRIVING Ardagh Hunter Turner Barristers & Solicitors 4300-1401 Lonsdale Ave., North Vancouver 986-4366 Free initial Consultation rene tee sy, a FLIGHT TRAINING es Miele ease t sy 3o Minutes tom 2ng Narines Brage *Multi-Engine Endorsement Aucratt rentals and charters Open 7 Days a Week 465-5414 AVIATION LTO. tt Meadows Alrport 39th Anniversary Sale Cambridge Carpet as, 2 for 1 on all Area Rugs Price based on largest rug SAVE More - piczad fonned of & SAVE 20% on Wall fo Wall Cleaning SAVE 20% on Furniture Cleaning All work done by highly trained personnel with 10 yrs. experience CALL TODAY 521-1855 CAMBRIDGE CARPET CARE LTD. 6910 Russell Ave, Burnaby 4 119-255 W.
