I am a_ cancer - patient, ,and nausea and vomiting are among my symptoms. Recently, I was ’ shopping in a local gift store, when I was. suddenly overtaken b nausea. There was no approprial Do you think the rudeness of fouling the floor in public view is so great that it should be avoided at all costs? 1 think my boyfriend was being overly considerate of the other: shoppers’ sensibilities and miss manners by Judith Martin receptacle handy, so my choice appeared to be between the tile floor and the cotton handkerchief offered by my boyfriend, which he thought would handle the problem and keep the mess to a minimum. - I thought the floor was the more appropriate solution, because it could have been more easily clean- ed up. As it turned out, I ended up using the handkerchief and soiling my clothes, but not the floor. In future, Pll make sure I'm equipped with an emesis basin, but the disagreement between my boyfriend and me is still unresolv- ed. . ; ; the store management at my ex- pense. GENTLE READER — Do you, really? Are you seriously telling Miss Manners that a gentleman who is devoted to you to the extent of wanting to absorb the mess himself is guilty.of lack of con- sideration? A medical emergency is a medi- cal emergency, and you surely do not expect Miss Manners to make etiquette rules about whether you can be sick. If she could, she would rule out illness altogether and spend the rest of her. days col- lecting prizes for that achievement. However, when some choice is possible, as you indicate it was, one tries to protect others from the effects, even at the expense of one’s own clothes. A gentleman who so identifies with one as to volunteer his assistance and his handkerchief is not, in Miss Man- ners’ opinion, to be vilified. DEAR MISS MANNERS — My daughter will soon be three-years- old, and I am planning to have a birthday party for her. Is there a polite way to tell the guests, if they are planning to bring gifts, to br- ing books for her? She has a closet full of stuffed animals she never plays with. GENTLE READER — There is a way to do this, but Miss Manners won’t tell you what it is unless you promise not to allow this child to grow up with the idea that she can dictate her wedding presents and demand cash payments on gradua- tions and anniversaries, on the grounds that she doesn’t want all that junk that people might think of to give her. Is that agreed? For childhood birthday use only — you may declare a literary theme party. Send out invitations with pictures of books or charac- ° | ters from children’s books, and call it something cute, such as ‘‘a - little great books party.’' That should give them the idea. But oh, yes, Miss Manners has one more request. Teach your daughter that she must welcome all _ presents with equal warmth.
