tna aE, s a ¥ ‘ é : f Doug Collins @ get this straight ® THE OTHER day I had the misfortune to read the West Van Teachers Association budget presentation to the school board for 1987/88, and worse English and leakier logic I have rarely seen. The opening sentence of the atrocity in question went this way: “The W.V.T.A. Education Finance Committee makes the following recommendations bas- ed strictly on what is required to make the system run effectively in the context of the way in which the system is presently structured and in consideration of the expectations of. the West Vancouver community and the larger society.”’ Ugh! If I were the West Van School Board | ‘would have told the WVTA executive to buzz off and do some homework. Even the professors couldn’t do worse. The association is spreading the false news that the teachers’ lot is not a happy one. The poor things claim, for in- stance, that a 16 per cent wage. increase would be necessary ‘‘to recoup the losses of the last five years.’’. Not mentioned is that they weve grossly overpaid to start wi.h. The: average teacher’ s* wage in Wes: Van as of September, 1985, was $38,220, compared with a | provincial average of $37,190. Since then there has been a 2.9 . per cent hike (including incre- ‘Ments) so today’s average would be about . $39,330. Which is enough to keep body and soul together, I would say. . Reading this litany of woes, one might think that the teachers were expiring in some kind of gulag. “Teacher stress’? is big with them, they being ‘tmaximum on grid,’’ whatever that is. They also say that the working week is 50 hours. No evidence is produced in proof thereof (assigned time is 25 hours), but they flaunt a study done in the Armstrong School District that claims a 50-hour work week for that area. So what? Is West Vancouver in Armstrong? Besides, the teachers in Armstrong may work long hours because, they like their jobs. I like my job and work about 70 hours a week at it. Should I complain to my publishers? The small point that teachers work on only about 194 days a year is also ignored. Teachers ‘‘should be able to enjoy life,’’ it is stated. Well, so should we all, Can’t always manage it, though. All kinds of work-dodging _ devices are proposed, like the employing of teacher aides, markers and supervision aides. ‘It seems ludicrous to pay $40,000 a year for teachers to Xerox and collate tests,’’ weeps the WVTA. Yes. But it would be even more ludicrous to employ others to do the photo-copying while the $40,000-a-year-people pick their noses. fi. VAN CITY COUNCIL Beer garden causes concern A FLAG football tournament’s planned beer garden is causing concern among ¢ity council members, and area res- idents will be asked how they feel about the idea. Despite a staff recommendation calling for rejection of the event . application, council withheld mak- ing a decision Monday until orga- - nizers canvass residents. “We did have a bad repuration two years ago,’’ said North Shore Flag Football League secretary Richard Barry. ‘‘(The event) is go- ing to be well policed.” A similar tournament two years ago left nearby residents fuming at the: mess that followed the event. By STEPHEN BARRINGTON News Reporter 4 “Tt just wasn’t arganized,’’ Barry told the News. But this time things will be much different, the group assured city council. . “Weve changed our whole board (of directors) and we want- to organize this league better,’ said Barry, who wants the tour- $4.50 p PER DAY © Off site supervised parking © Complimentary shuttle. to Vancouver International Airport © 24 hours per day - 7 days per week e.Car servicing available e 500 C.P.
