Ferron, 28, credits his two Alaskan malamutes, Rebel and Patrick, with saving his life. “Patrick was jumping on my bed. and Rebel was pulling the sheets and howling her head off,’’ Ferron said. ‘Il guess they had smelled the smoke...even the fire marshall said 1 didn’t have too much time to get out. “T knew they were compas- sionate dogs...they love people. But | never thought they were capable of saving my life. They're heroes. If the dogs hadn't alerted me it would have been all over.’’ Lieut. William Biela, of the North Vancouver District Fire Department, agreed the dogs were responsible for saving Ferron from the glaze at 241 Parkhurst: Road. He added it also helped that Fer- ron kept his bedroom door shut. Ferron, who went to bed around 9 pam. that night, kept the dogs with him at the foot of the bed. There were no smoke alarms in the house, “When I got out of bed and opened the door the whole wall was on fire. The flames just shot in. | got on the ground and crawl- ed to the front door.
