Al0 - Sunday, June 26, 1983 - North Shore News inquiring reporter | by Ellsworth Dickson To use a currently popular kid’s phrase, the new domed stadium could be described as “totally awesome.” Today’s question ts: ‘What do you think of the new stadium?” Brent Dawson West Vancouver I saw the Queen there and I was really impress- ed by the new stadium. It will be a great place for bands as well as various sports. It’s wonderful that the players and fans won't get wet anymore. Glenn Keen North Vancouver 1 saw the Whitecaps there and I think the stadium is a great place. The view of the field is good from eéverywhere and the large TV can be seen from most areas, although it might be an idea to have two screens. It would be nice to have more Concessions. Peter Winton Bowen Island The new stadium is a really beauuful place. 1 felt the opening ceremonies could have been more lavish The concessions were slow, but I'm sure things will improve. The report urged council to provide more funding in the form of an activity bonus grant - extra money which would depend on how well the arts council had operated the previous year. It also recommended that the community arts council should be given more say in how council spends money budgeted for arts and culture in the community. Council received the report and authorized the task force to launch Part Two of its study: to explore the concept of a performing arts centre in West Van- couver and how to set it up. “And that’s the big one we're all waiting for,” said Mayor Derrick Humphreys after the meeting. “The goal of the arts community is to have this building by 1986. It’s an exciting prospect.” “We're at the crucial stage now,” said Hicks who is step- ping down as_ chairman because of other com- mitments. He will be replac- ed by Peter Jones, a former mayor of the municipality. “Wherever the task torce went, we came across people urgently needing more facilities. It's now up to the task force to zero in on this and identify the kind of facilities which are needed,” said Hicks. Although the idea has never got anywhere in the past, Hicks believes that within the last two years the arts council has become a successful and well organiz- ed group. “If anybody can make this happen, they can,” he said. “These people are doing a great job for the community but they are operating on a shoestring budget,” declared Hicks, calling on the people of West Vancouver to sup- port their arts community. Although in times of restraint other arts centres like Presentation House are struggling, Hicks maintains that community arts are even more important because they provide alter- natives to expensive downtown activities. Arts council Vice- President Phillip Tattersfield hopes the task force will maintain its momentum and come up with stage two of its report in the fall. The arts in West Van- couver had been waiting in the wings too long, “their time has come,” he said. “Extremely pleased,” with the first task force report, he noted that, in the past, sports and recreation had always received the lion’s share of municipal funding and atten- tion. “As a result,” he added, “the arts groups are strugg]- ing to keep going in cramped quarters, church basements and odd corners of the com- munity. It’s a tribute to them that they have managed to survive at all.” “Now the arts scene is wak- ing up in West Vancouver and our turn has come,” Tat- tersfield said. “This report is a milestone because now we are regarded as a viable and respectable group. Now we have a platform, I think this arts centre will finally get off the ground.” As to whether 1986 1s a reahstic target date, he stressed that the arts council has been doing a great deal of research behind the scenes. “If a centre was built tomorrow we know we could HANG OUT WITH THE EXPERTS Try inversion For a BETTER BACK © eases pain of sciatica, scollosis & disc-related problems * stretches spine & relaxes muscles BETTER BODY * enhances training ottect * increases circulation ' ph 872-4322 s centre ‘at crucial stage’ fill it with activities.” In addition to municipal funding, the arts council hopes to raise money for the centre from arts support agencies, the provincial government and a public fundraising drive. CRASH PAD 7. res Vol. Sense & the Common Paint Job This is my quarterly dissertation on the art of getting what you pay for as it relates to your pretty, (or not-so- pretty) car. It is inspired to some degree by the advertised specials | see cropping up here and there, the tried and true under- $300 blitz which indeed has its place, but I get ahead of myself. Gallons of Value, Dept. The first thing you have to realize is somewhere in that under-$300-paint-job there is going to be compromise. We pay $60 - $96 per gallon for our paint, and that ain't the expensive stuff, either. You can really low ball it on paint if you want, right down to $28 a gallon, your choice of white, black, red, maybe something else. To me, anyone who does this is a victim of weak thinking. You are paying someone to slather this gunk on your car at the rate of $35.30 an hour. It’s like getting a master dressmaker to tailor a beautiful gown out of sack cloth. Counting the Hours, Dept. The other place you can compromise on the blitzo paint job is, of course, the most expensive part — the labour. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that if you have $180 worth of materials, you have $120 left for labour. You have 339 hours of labour left. This is pretty wild, considering the average time for a VW bug with no moulding is 10 hours, and for the real queens of the road, where you have to pull off lights and chrome, it can be up to 30 hours of a man’s time. Two coats of cheap paint will actually devalue your car in short order, if you don’t sell it quick. And its a nasty trick to play on the person you are selling it to There just isn't enough to go around its like raking the ground and saying you've dug the garden Through a Clear Coat You Can See Forever, Dept.
