Ea mailbox Sager’s pub issue still boiling Dear Editor: With all the hue and cry over the Sagers’ application to West Van council to turn their shop into a _ neigh- bourhood pub, it appears that the application § is becoming less and less a petition and more and more an ultimatum. Assuming that the Sagers’ proposed pub would be run similarly to the other two pubs in West Van, it would be safe to assume that the chentele of the Sagers’ establishment would be similar, the vast majority solid, responsible citizens. The management of these pubs has worked hard to refuse service to. un- desirables, and to those who are obviously drunk, but they can no more police all their patrons than can the local constabulary. There is, however, bet- ween these two groups, a group of perhaps ten per cent of all pub patrons that think nothing of downing six pints, and then climbing behind the wheel of their car. Most of these are in the 19-35 age group, and the few of those who are unem- ployed have that much more tuume than others to do this. Mr. Sager has gone a long way towards excluding these people from his proposed pub with a dress code, but as many of them wear exactly the sort of dress that will be specified on a daily basis, I don’t think we'll see a sizable reduction in the number of this type of patron at all. And while a free call for a taxi is a commendable idea, itis also in place at the other two pubs, where it 1s so seldom unlhized that it makes one wonder how many drunk drivers we really have on our roads Regarding parking, the Squarengeger is roughly the same size as the Sagers’ proposed = establishment, and, depending on how full it is. Uhere are anywhere up to fifty cars scattered tn the three tiny) parking = lots around it These are here in spite of the large number of highrises in the immediate vicinity, from which patrons were expected to walk With no such highrise base, how can the Sapers claim they will have no parking problem” After all, a sixty five seal pub holds far more than sixty five people Standing room only is the rule rather than the cx cepbon and TP would capect a» pub the size oof the proposed one to hold oan cacess of one hundred patrons at peak penods Thus is truc of both the Square ngeger and the Proller seo why should the Sapers proposed establishment be any different’ A tew years ago, the G&P Steakhouse across the street from the Sagers’ Maple Shop apphed tor a pub heence for ws smaller cstablishment It was refused oon | grounds Strntlar to those paven in the Sagers ccfusal Should the “4a Social , n Credit ee ai Sagers’ application now be approved, though traffic has grown heavier, rather than lighter in recent years? Statements that the bull- dozers will be called in if the application is not approved are loathsome, particularly when uttered by one of West Vancouver's leading citizens. After all, the prestige of owning a heritage or heritage-type building is balanced by a responsibility to that building that is every bit as great. By denigrating his responsiblity to his building Mr. Sager diminishes his considerable prestige by no small amount. Friends and supporters who are incited by his statements to complain to the local media diminish it still fur- ther. The lack of coverage given to the council's side is astounding, considering its importance to the issue. The News should not further damage the Sagers’ credibility by printing more stories in its own uniquely inflammatory prose without considering the opinions of those actually responsible for refusing the application. Then again, this is exactly the sort of “reporting” I would expect from an ad- vertising-laden scandal sheet that would front-page a picture of four youths boozing at the top of the Cypress Bowl Road while patting them on the back for getting their beer past the West Vancouver police at the bottom. Dear Editor: I would hike to express my appreciation to C.U.P.E., Local 1004, for their current N.D.P. television advertis- ment featuring the farmer and his horse. The ad, which is in very poor taste, convinced me CLASSIFIED 986-6222 of business experience and his understanding for the needs of friends and fellow merchants. We are not Dundarave residents, but feel we must yoice our concem over this affair. You are stretching the political constraints you work within, and without justifiable cause, unless you are indeed cowering from the eccentric cries of Victorian alarmists who apparently are incapable of appreciating the small pleasures in life — in this case, a simple neigh- bourhood = establishment where man may meet his fellow man, and if he should want a drink in the process, why not? This is much healthier than drinking alone or driving the car in search of comradeship and a little cheer. We need your “time gentlemen, please,” to reconsider this matter. J. Foster, D. Foster, M.
